ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE– A type of architecture which originates from nature, meaning the composition of human and natural world around us. Nature taught us everything, it has simple to complex all type of structure embedded in it.

Organic meaning raw, natural which can blend into the nature as it belongs to it. The same follows to Organic Architecture.

Some of the Principles of F.L Wright organic architecture-

  1. Building and Site- Site is earth yet raw, it has its own form and structure (flat or contour), trees and other plantation is a part of landform. Building derives its form partially or fully from nature of site. Building grows out of the landscape as naturally as plant.
  2. Material- Material or skin of the building which artistically present its texture, color and strength. Minimal material used in organic architecture.
  3. Shelter- The structure should convey a sense of shelter, protection and should never lack privacy or left unprotected.
  4. Space- Space is essence of structure, it can be seen when packed up with walls, floor, roof unless it is free and unseen. Wright says “The reality of the building does not consist of the roof and the walls but the space within to be lived in”. An Area can be fully experienced only when viewed from one point to another while moving from a space to another.
  5. Proportion and Scale- Nature has its own proportion and scales, disturbing them would result in absurd or illogical forms. Wright says ” Integral harmony of proportion to the human figure to have all details so designed as to make the human relationship to architecture not only convenient but charming”.
  6. Nature- Nature is instructor for all, be it architects, artist, engineers, doctor, etc. nature taught us the possibilities to build occupy space. In organic architecture, building should reflect nature, be a part of nature, it should not misfit.
  7. Repose- Creating suitable environment for human life. Uncluttered spaces or using material which are not natural creating a negative impact is not acceptable in organic architecture.
  8. Grammar- It is a rule of language or a morphology. All parts of the building form from smallest point to overall form thus speak the same language.
  9. Ornament- Nature itself is an ornament, external ornamentation is not required in organic buildings.
  10. Human Value- Wright says “All values are human values or else not valuable”. Respecting our nature as everything originates from it and diminish in it.
  11. Simplicity- Simplicity is uniqueness, it is the evidence of mind, breadth of scheme, wealth of detail and withal a sense of completeness found in nature.
  12. Mechanical system and Furnishings- Or Service which need to be integral part of building just like the bones, muscles and other things in a living organism.
