A class taught at The College of William and Mary on November 16, 2021, as part of the course “COLL 200/RELG 315/CLCV 221 Judaism before the Rabbis.” taught by Professor Michael Daise. The class was taught under the auspices of The Program in Judaic Studies at The College of William and Mary, which I thank for the invitation. I am grateful to Professor Daise for initiating the invitation and for the gracious introduction on November 16.
The talk was based on a reading assignment of articles by Hans (Yohanan) Lewy and Erich Gruen discussing Tacitus’ excursus on the Jews. The articles are Y. Lewy, ‘Tacitus on the Jews,” in J. Dan, Binah, Vol. 1, Studies in Jewish History (New York, 1989), 15-46. Gruen’s essay has appeared in several places. I used the version in E. Gruen, Rethinking the Other in Antiquity (Princeton, 2011), 179-196.
Please read the text of my talk along with the PowerPoint. The place to access the appropriate PowerPoint slide is indicated in the text.

Originally written and published in response to the Winograd report on the Second Lebanon War.
Unfortunately, equally appropriate with only small minor changes to the confrontation with Hamas in 2021.

The Pdf posted here consists of two parts:
The second part, without notes, is the text read at the 2014 Meeting of the Association of Jewish Studies Conference in Baltimore. It would be best of you read the second part first, in conjunction with the handout that accompanied that Conference paper, as they are the most complete treatment of the topic.
The first part is an uncompleted article on the topic..

This talk was delivered at the AJS Meeting in Washington in December 2017, organized by Dr. Michal Bar-Asher Siegal of Ben Gurion University. It was part of a panel in which participants were asked to identify a work of scholarship which they considered a "turning point" in scholarship, then explain why this was a "turning point." Finally, the presentation was to conclude with an evaluation of the status of the "turning point" today.

"Jerusalem Day," has been a sore spot for me for years. This year, ,2021, it was the spark that has set the country on fire and feels like the beginning of a civil war.  I upload a personal opinion column written for the Jerusalem Report in 2013, explaining why I do NOT celebrate Jerusalem Day. The sense that Israel has swallowed the poison pill and is suffering the consequences is even more intense today.

Jerusalem Report, May 20 2013.
