PAMA is a pomegranate flavored liqueur made with natural pomegranate juice, vodka, and a small amount of tequila. On its own, the assertive tartness of pomegranate is supported by juicy sweetness and light alcohol expression at 17%. It’s one of those sippers where you don’t notice the alcohol.
The PAMA website offers pages of cocktail recipes and I came away with three candidates for our drink lab; the PAMA Tropical-Tini, PAMA Lemon Drop, and PAMA Margarita.
The Recipes
PAMA Tropical-Tini
- 1.5 oz. PAMA
- 1 oz. Pineapple Vodka
- Splash of Pineapple Juice
PAMA Lemon Drop
- 1.5 oz. PAMA
- .75 oz. Triple Sec
- 1.5 oz. Sour Mix
PAMA Margarita
- 2.5 oz. PAMA
- 1 oz. Reposado Tequila
- .5 oz. Triple Sec
- Splash of lime
- Splash of simple syrup
I love the combined flavors of orange and pineapple so for the PAMA Tropical-Tini, I’m substituting Pinnacle Orange Whipped in place of pineapple vodka. I use an extra-large splash of pineapple juice. The Pinnacle vodka winds up the dominant flavor, but PAMA still lends a tasty tartness to the overall mix.
For the PAMA Lemon Drop, Cointreau is our triple sec of choice. I’m using Lemon Drop Martini Mixer for the sour mix but Rose’s Sweet and Sour Drink Mix would probably work just as well. The pomegranate and lemon fruit flavors in this drink complement each other beautifully and the subtle orange of the Cointreau adds another layer of complexity. The alcohol in this cocktail is almost imperceptible making it a suitable choice if you don’t care for the taste of alcohol or prefer a very light drink.
I’m using Herradura Reposado Tequila for the PAMA Margarita. When drinking tequila neat, we like Don Julio or Patron Anejo better than Herradura, but it does mix well with PAMA. The fresh lime brings brightness to the flavor profile and the tequila packs a punch on the finish. Of the three samples in this drink lab, the PAMA Margarita has the highest alcohol content.
