Rain on the way, climatologist says

Some areas of the Corn Belt could soon receive some much-needed precipitation.

Justin Glisan, state climatologist for the Iowa Department of Agriculture, says a more active storm track is expected over the next seven days. “Anywhere from an inch to two-plus inches across much of the state. And this we see stretching from generally the Gulf Coast up north into Wisconsin and Minnesota.”

He tells Brownfield the precipitation will develop due to several factors. “The Gulf moisture gate is open, so ample moisture flow off of the Gulf into the north. And then we have this southwesterly flow over the next several days.”

Glisan says the low-pressure system will not be a drought buster. “But seeing the potential for 1-2 possibly 3-inch totals really does support increased shallow moisture, but also some rebound in stream flows.”

He says subsoil profiles are severely depleted across the region.
