Quick Sremski Karlovci travel guide: What to Do and See in Sremski Karlovci (with Map).

Sremski Karlovci is an easy and worthwhile day trip from Novi Sad or even Belgrade. It is mainly known for two things: The former seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church and wine.

Here’s our quick Sremski Karlovci travel guide including what to do and see in Sremski Karlovci.

How Much Time Do You Need in Sremski Karlovci?

Sremski Karlovci is a great day trip destination. Half a day is enough to explore this small town.

Best Things to Do in Sremski Karlovci

As Sremski Karlovci is a small town, you only need a couple of hours to see the main attractions. All of the attractions we have listed are within easy walking distance from the train station.

1. Explore Around the Main Square

The main sights of Sremski Karlovci are located around the main square:

  1. The Main Square itself, named after poet Branko Radičević.
  2. The Patriarchate Court was once the centre of power for the Serbian Orthodox Church. Today, it serves as a museum.
  3. Karlovci Gymnasium (high school), the oldest secondary school in Serbia.
  4. The Four Lions Fountain. Those who taste the fountain’s water will come back to the town someday 😉
  5. St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral.
  6. Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
  7. Clerical High School of Saint Arsenije.

2. Have a Wine Tasting

There are tons of wineries in Sremski Karlovci. We chose the Museum of Beekeeping and Winery Živanović because it’s within easy walking distance to the city centre and we knew it was tourist-friendly.

Definitely try Bermet, which is only produced in Sremski Karlovci.

We did not pre-book anything. Upon arrival, we got a private tour as well as a tasting of 7 wines and 3 honeys. 10/10 would recommend 😉

3. Hike to the Viewpoint

If you know us, you know that we love viewpoints. The one in Sremski Karlovci is no exception. You have to hike up a couple of stairs but the walk is easy enough and the view is super rewarding. You can see the town centre as well as the Danube and the surroundings.

4. Roam Around a Bit

It was a lot of fun walking around some of the side streets of Sremski Karlovci. Our favourite find was the picturesque Trampa shoe shop with the charismatic owner who even sang a song for us.

Where to Eat in Sremski Karlovci

Your best options for food in Sremski Karlovci are:

  1. There are plenty of restaurants around the main square (e.g. Bermet Villa).
  2. Pasent on the Danube.
  3. We have marked a cheap bakery on the map if you’re on a budget like us – we enjoyed their Burek.

How to Get to Sremski Karlovci?

Sremski Karlovci is located between Belgrade and Novi Sad. Buses and trains between the two biggest cities in Serbia run regularly. If you don’t have a lot of luggage, you can even do it as we did and break up your journey from Belgrade to Novi Sad in Sremski Karlovci for a couple of hours.

We took the train both ways – the train station and the bus station are super close together.

💡
Bucketlist2life tip: There are no lockers or staff at the train station. On your way from Sremski Karlovci, you have to buy the ticket on the train.

Of course, you can also choose to go on a guided tour from Belgrade to Sremski Karlovci.
