Etymology of Mirabilis:
La. mirabilis = wonderful, remarkable; perhaps referring to M. jalapa for three reasons: flowers of different colours appear on the plant simultaneously; an individual flower may be touched with different colours; flowers can change colour – e.g. yellow to dark pink, white to light violet – as they mature.
