Our Nostalgia Trek to #Rax in Ironton, Ohio

At its peak in the 1980s, the Rax chain had grown to 504 locations in 38 states along with two restaurants in Guatemala. Rax has extensively scaled down its operations since its peak in the 1980s. This is the Ironton, Ohio location. Photos by John Clise

This past summer Rebecca planned a great day trip to Ironton, Ohio so that we could eat at a Rax Restaurant. Rax is a childhood favorite of ours, though it was in two different states. Mine was in Vincennes, Indiana, and hers was in Weston, West Virginia.

I didn’t know there were any locations still open. There are five stores still open, though the website says eight. Three in Ohio, one in Kentucky and one in Illinois. We plan on visiting the other sometime this year or early next year.

It was a great trip. It was only a couple of hours from our home in central West Virginia. Ironton is a great little town, but we’ll talk more about that in future stories. Today we bathe in the tasty nostalgia that is Rax.

Deluxe Rax Roast Beef — Thin sliced Rax Roast Beef stacked high on a toasted corn dusted steak bun topped with mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato.

Of course, I had the Rax Deluxe. It was one of my favorite sandwiches growing up. It was just as delicious today as it was way back when I was a teenager growing up in the cornfields of Indiana.

I think it’s the corn dusted bun that makes it for me. Or maybe it’s the shredded lettuce. It all goes together so well and so tasty.

Rebecca had the regular roast beef sandwich. It was a favorite when she was a kid. The sandwich is thin sliced Rax Roast Beef stacked high on a toasted Kaiser Bun. She put catsup on her sandwich.

Though we had our hearts set on roast beef, we were told by multiple people before getting there for lunch that the chicken tender meal was the best around. It seemed to be the general consensus of the area. We might give those a try next time we are in for a visit to Rax.

Seasoned Rax twisty fries are great. You may even purchase a dipping cup of Ranch dressing or Rax cheddar cheese sauce.

Going to Rax was like being at home again. It was just so great to be able to go to Rax again. It’s still the best roast beef sandwich around of you ask me.
