Osijek

Osijek carries the title of the largest city in eastern Croatia with approximately 115,000 inhabitants. It represents the heart of Slavonia, a historical and cultural spot consisting of four parts — Gornji Grad, Donji Grad, Novi Grad and a baroque center Tvrđa.

When it comes to Osijek’s landscape, it is mostly a lowland area suitable for hunting and angling. Kopački rit, the Croatian park of nature, home of different species, seems to be known world wide. Along with its hunting tourism, its gastronomy tends to go pretty well. Some of the specialties are meat-based meals such as kulen and other types of sausages, fish dishes, and bacon. Even though Slavonians like wines and are widely known for them, they seem to enjoy Osječko beer as well.

Osijek’s miscellaneous history goes back to Neolithic times. It was restored and gained the title of the largest city in Croatia in the past… When the Croatian war of Independence occurred, Osijek suffered damage but seemed to keep its baroque spirit.

This Slavonian city has a continental climate — hot summers and cold winters, usually accompanied by snow. It actually makes it even more special — two different seasons for different experiences.

It is situated on the bank of the river Drava which represents a good angling location; also, during the summer days, people seem to enjoy the beach. Osijek is located far away from the sea but it has its own beach on the Drava River, called Copacabana which is also a recreational center. This city has a lot of advantages when it comes to sport. If you are a fan or just looking for a place to chill out, Copacabana is the right place for you — you can enjoy playing football, basketball, handball, tennis, swimming in the pool…

Osijek is a huge industrial center. Mentioning that, it is worthwhile to say that Saponia Osijek is a relevant company in chemical industry. Wood, footwear, silk, and textile industries are also well developed. Widespread cultivation of various plants also makes Osijek an agricultural center.

With its enormous historical heritage, parks and the Drava River, Osijek represents bait for adventurers. Known for its baroque style, it really is a popular tourist destination. There are numerous important things to see such as the main square called Trg Ante Starčevića, the busiest streets of Osijek called Županijska and Kapucinska streets, Tvrđa — the old baroque part of the city, a bridge across Drava, The Croatian National Theater dated from 1907 and much more.

One more thing to say, Davor Šuker, probably the most famous Croatian football player, was born in Osijek.
