Places to Visit in Novi Sad, Serbia

Novi Sad, the second-largest city in Serbia, can be said to be a relic of Belgrade, Budapest, and the remnants of the Danube. Especially in the 18th century, Novi Sad was an important city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and today it is one of the top destinations for many travelers. In this content where we introduce the attractions of Novi Sad, you can get to know this cultural city.

This city has a history of suffering. Due to its strategic location on the banks of the Danube River, every passing empire has left its mark here, including us Turks. Especially in 1999, NATO almost completely destroyed the city.

Three of the city's iconic bridges were destroyed after the attacks and were rebuilt in 2000. The city's resilience during this period, its scars from the war, and its historical atmosphere make it even more valuable.

The city center resembles the famous İstiklal Avenue. However, there won't be excessive crowds, noise, and hustle and bustle here. At night, you can feel an atmosphere reminiscent of Izmir's bar street and Bodrum's tavern streets.

Just like in Belgrade, there is a carnivorous delight here as well. You can see waiters in traditional attire in cafes and restaurants. They add a nice touch to the aesthetic historical buildings. When I saw that Belgrade's streets were nothing but wheat fields and vineyards, I realized that you can easily drink wine here.

If they know you're a tourist, rest assured they will welcome you warmly 😊

How to Get to Novi Sad?

By Plane:

  • The airport used is Nikola Tesla Airport. From this airport, you can reach the city center by taking the A1 bus (300 DINAR) or a taxi (1500-200 DINAR). Unfortunately, there is no direct access from the airport to Novi Sad. Therefore, you will need to first come to Belgrade and then use bus or train transportation to reach Novi Sad. If you get off the A1 bus in the city center, you can reach the bus station in about 15-20 minutes on foot. Taxi service is always available. You can also reach the train station by walking for 15-20 minutes or use the taxi option mentioned above.

By Train:

  • Go to Belgrade train station in the Savamala district. The round trip costs an average of 450-500 dinars. Around the central Belgrade Cultural Center, you can find tourism information offices where you can get recommendations. If you live on the Kalemegdan side, tram line number 2 will take you directly to the train station.

By Bus:

  • Right next to the train station in Belgrade, there is a bus stop for Novi Sad. We recommend taking the bus, especially because you can be in touch with nature along the way. You will have the opportunity to explore the city better. Round-trip bus fees to Novi Sad range from 1,000 to 1,500 dinars. After getting off the bus, you can get more information from the tourism information office at the Novi Sad Serbia terminal. Buses run about every hour, but please inquire for details. Some buses have different routes and transfers. You also need to specify that you want to go directly.

So, how many kilometers are there between Novi Sad and Belgrade? It's an average of 100 km. You can reach Novi Sad from Belgrade in 1 hour and 14 minutes.

Places to Visit in Novi Sad, Serbia

City Hall:

  • The Novi Sad City Hall, built in 1895, is one of the most magnificent buildings in Novi Sad. The City Hall is open to tourists. When you reach the square, you can step inside and take photos in the dazzling ceremonial hall.

Trg Slobode Square:

  • We recommend visiting Trg Slobode Square, which is the historic square in the heart of the city. If you can't find it as Trg Slobode on the map, you can try Freedom Square or Svetozar Milet Square. In fact, you will be able to tell that you are right in the square from many directions, from the community building to the church in the square. Various historical buildings such as Voyvodina Bank and Voyvodina Hotel are also located in the square.

Dunavska Street:

  • Novi Sad, another important city in Serbia, like Belgrade and Niš, also has a beautiful street called Dunavska. There are restaurants, bars, and cafes in this pedestrian area. Restaurants and cafes here are often a meeting place for locals and young people. It's worth mentioning that most of the buildings on Dunavska Street are over 100 years old. Therefore, this historical street is also a nice area for photography enthusiasts.

Petrovaradin Clock Tower:

  • Who wouldn't want to see the perfect view of the Danube and Novi Sad under this baroque clock tower? Petrovaradin Clock Tower, one of the most impressive views in Novi Sad, has an interesting feature. When you take a closer look at the clock, you'll realize that there's something else. If you need to check before you go, you'll see that the hour and minute hands of the clock have changed. This is because it allows Danube fishermen to see the time from a distance. We recommend taking your time here and enjoying the beautiful view.

Petrovaradin Fortress:

  • The Balkans and Serbia, like the Ottoman architecture and traces, are full of them. Petrovaradin Fortress is one of the places where the Ottoman Empire ruled. The castle, which remained under Ottoman rule for 150 years, is an interesting architectural structure. The most beautiful parts of the castle are the tunnels, underground tombs, and the fact that the walls are still standing. It can be said that this historical castle is among the places to visit in Novi Sad. Visit Petrovaradin Fortress for comprehensive tours, walks in the historic town surrounding the castle, and a delicious meal at a restaurant overlooking the Danube River.

Bishop's Palace:

  • Another architectural work that welcomes you with its grandeur when you go to Novi Sad is the Bishop's Palace. It can be said that this palace has a history of about 300 years. This place, which hosted many historical figures, will enchant you in Novi Sad. While exploring the inside of the Bishop's Palace, don't forget to take a look at the courtyard area, dining room, and chapel.
