Stams Abbey is one of the most important monasteries in Austria. It was founded in 1273 as a family foundation of the Counts of Görtz Tyrol.
Today's monastery was rebuilt in the 17th century after a number of destructions (a fire, looting, damage from the Peasants' War) and completely renovated at the beginning of the 21st century.
Part of the monastery complex can be visited free of charge. The entire monastery (now a museum) can be visited at certain times of the year, information on +43 5263 6242.
