Herrnbaumgarten

Wine-growing municipality in the north-east of the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Weinviertel. The Czech border is ten kilometres to the north. In recent years, Herrnbaumgarten has become known mainly for its "Association for the Utilisation of Surplus Thoughts". Among many other curiosities, there is a "24-hour vineyard snail race". About a dozen winegrowers in the municipality have joined together to form the "Vinetum" brand association. In 1995, the "Association for the Preservation and Revival of the Kellergassen" was formed. Among other things, natural stone walls and pretty lanterns were erected. In spring 2005, the "verruckte Vinothek" was opened, where a different winegrower always presents his products.

Herrnbaumgarten - Weinberge

The vineyards of the municipality cover a total of about 600 hectares. The best vineyards include Altenbergen, Granitz, Johannesbergen (the largest), Hennkratzer, Hödeln, Kreinhölzer and Reck am Aigen, which was already mentioned in a document in 1043. The soils consist largely of loam and loess. The two main varieties are Grüner Veltliner and Welschriesling, which are largely used as base wines for Austrian sparkling wine production. Other varieties cultivated are Pinot Blanc, Zweigelt, Blauer Portugieser and Blauburger. Shares in the vineyards are held, for example, by the wineries Frank Harald, Hofkellerei Stiftung Fürst Liechtenstein (with headquarters in Wilfersdorf) and Woditschka Rudolf.
