Your Ultimate Guide to Hanauma Bay State Park

The pristine marine ecosystem of Hanauma Bay State Park has long been one of Oahu’s top attractions. The gorgeous, clear blue waters of Hanauma Bay exist in a volcanic cone. This is why this formation is known as “The Curved Bay.” Here’s everything you need to know about it!

History

Prior to becoming a protected environment, Hawaiian royalty used the bay for fishing and recreation. In the 20th century, it became more developed and thus more accessible to visitors. The resulting increase in visitors meant that measures were needed to preserve the area. Today, a visit to Hanauma Bay includes passing through a marine education center. This center is meant to inform visitors about the park’s conservation efforts.

Admission and Hours

Every Tuesday, the bay is closed to the public. For the rest of the week, Hanauma Bay’s hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the summer and 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the winter. Admission to Hanauma Bay is free for children under 12, active-duty military, and local residents. For everyone else, admission costs $7.50 per person.

Tips for Your Visit to Hanauma Bay

Your visit to the bay is bound to be unforgettable no matter what. However, there are a few measures you can take to make the most of your visit to this stunning park. First, we recommend using reef-safe sunscreen before visiting. This means avoiding ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene, which all damage coral reefs. Hanauma Bay is a sunny spot, so don’t skip this step! We also recommend taking the shuttle that runs from Waikiki to Hanauma Bay. There are plenty of parking spots, but they often fill up quickly, so the shuttle is your best choice!

What to Do at Hanauma Bay State Park

One of the most popular activities at Hanauma Bay State Park is snorkeling! A snorkeling tour allows you to literally immerse yourself in the incredible beauty of the bay. There are several colorful species of marine life here. What better way to get up-close and personal with them? During a snorkeling excursion, be sure to look for sea turtles, Moray eels, and Reef Triggerfish. Of course, you’ll also get to see the living coral that makes Hanauma Bay such an important ecosystem.
