Biography

2016 (Senior): A Big West honorable mention selection...undrafted, but was signed as a free agent by the Chicago White Sox in 2017…started 16 games on the mound, beginning the year as the No. 2 starter, becoming the Friday night starter the last four series…went 7-3 with a 3.44 ERA and 50 strikeouts…ranked second in the Big West and first on the team with 107.1 innings pitched…tied for second in the BWC with two complete games…tossed a complete game shutout at UC Davis (4/10), the first since 2/26/14, striking out three and retiring the last 15 batters of the game…also tossed a complete game versus Santa Clara (3/25), giving up one run with five strikeouts and no walks…worked 7.2 scoreless innings versus Chicago State (3/18), logging five strikeouts without a walk…picked up the win at #18 CS Fullerton (5/20), pitching 5.2 innings allowing three runs with four strikeouts…struck out a career-high six batters without a walk in eight innings versus West Virginia (3/4).

2015 (Junior): Made 16 appearances in his first season at Hawai’i, finishing with a 2-3 record and 4.47 ERA, registering 26 strikeouts with just 12 walks in 44.1 innings of work…After beginning the season as a fourth starter—making six (6) starts, he transitioned into a top reliever role once the ‘Bows got to conference play, making 10 total relief appearances on the year, logging a 3.57 ERA in 17.2 innings as a reliever, limiting opponents to just .222 hitting…Got off to a fast start on the year, making his first UH start against No. 15 Oregon (2/16), pitching 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing just four (4) hits and striking out four (4)…Made his longest appearance against Oklahoma (3/14), going six (6.0) innings against the Sooners…In 5.2 innings against Hofstra (2/21), he recorded a season-high five (5) strikeouts, also fanning four (4) batters in four (4.0) innings against No. 8 Houston at Minute Maid Park…Held opponents without an earned run in 7-of-10 relief appearances and was stellar against Big West foes, holding a 0.75 ERA in six (6) conference outings with a .195 average against…Logged his top BWC performance in 5.1 innings at UC Riverside, allowing just three (3) hits with no runs, while striking out three (3).
 
Prior To UH:  Played two (2) seasons at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, California, pitching for Coach Tony Bloomfield…As a sophomore, Von Ruden recorded a 1.34 ERA and 8-3 record in 12 appearances as a starter for the Hawks, leading the pitching staff…He threw one (1) complete game and worked through 80.2 innings, striking out 59 opponents, with .206 batting against…As a freshman, Von Ruden went 4-5 with a 3.46 ERA through 14 appearances, striking out 47 through 78 innings pitched…Also playing third base, Von Ruden hit .260 with three (3) runs and four (4) RBI…As a sophomore, he earned All-Big 8 and All-Region honors...For the second time in his career, Von Ruden worked on the pitching staff with Hawai'i/Franklin High School teammate Josh Pigg.

Prep: A 2012 graduate of Franklin High School in Elk Grove, Calif., he was a two-year varsity letterman in baseball under Coach Brian Kilby…Aided the Wildcats to a first-ever Sac-Joaquin Section Division I North championship in 2012…As a senior, Von Ruden had a 2.02 ERA with a 2-3 record, striking out 38 opponents in 41.2 innings across 11 appearances…At the plate in his final year, Von Ruden hit .299 with 22 RBI and 17 runs through 34 games, stealing 13 bases…As a junior, Von Ruden held a 2.38 ERA and 6-0 record, striking out 29 opponents in 32.1 innings, while also notching 14 runs and nine (9) RBI on offense…Earned first team All-Delta Valley Conference honors as a senior…Earned Scholar-Athlete honors…Played alongside fellow ‘Bows pitcher Josh Pigg at FHS…After his final season, was ranked the 37th best prospect in California by MaxPreps.
