REDUCING THE RISK OF IDENTITY THEFT Identity theft commonly begins with the loss or theft of a wallet or purse. But there are many high-tech and low-tech ways criminals can get their hands on your personal and financial information. Identity thieves will use your name or personal information, such as your credit card number, driver’s license number or Social Security number to steal your personal information to open credit accounts or bank accounts, as well as make major purchases in your name. These criminals use your sensitive information to take over existing accounts, or open new accounts. This can result in damage to your credit rating and cause denials to credit and job offers. Low-Tech Techniques Criminals are increasingly creative in the methods they use to get their hands or eyes on your personal information, and ultimately, your money. Here are some of the low-tech techniques they employ: • Dumpster diving • Mail theft from unsecured residential mailboxes • Shoulder surfing takes place when a thief watches or listens over your shoulder as you enter your PIN into an ATM machine. They may even follow you home or your place of work to gather additional information about you. High-Tech Techniques Data transferred across the internet can be intercepted by identity thieves, using the following techniques: • Phishing and Pharming: Phishing is a scam in which consumers are tricked into entering their personal information via a fake email address and website form. Pharming occurs when hackers steal personal information from numerous people simultaneously
through something known as “domain spoofing.” They take over a DNS server and redirect user information to a new website that they use to gather, collect and “pharm” illegal information. • Skimming: Thieves quickly and temporarily steal a credit card and run it through a skimmer, a credit card reader that has been reprogrammed to steal information off the card. Fight Back: Reduce the Risks While there are no guarantees that your identity will never be stolen or compromised, there are several steps you can take to minimize the risks. Here are a few of them: • Before you discard personal information you no longer need, such as credit card receipts, billing statements and pre-approved credit card offers, shred them using, at best, a diagonal-cut shredder. • Create unique passwords and personal identification numbers (PINS) and avoid using easily available information such as your mother’s maiden name, date of birth or last four digits of your Social Security number. • Do not give your Social Security number to people or companies you do not know. • Guard your mail from theft. Promptly remove your incoming mail from your mailbox and place outgoing mail in locked collection boxes at your local post office. • Before disclosing personal information, even to people you know where you shop or do business, insist on knowing the reason(s) your personal information is required and how it will be used. • Carry only the information you need with you. Always keep your personal information and documents in a safe and secure place. • Order and review a copy of your credit report at least once a year.

3 TIPS FOR IMPROVING YOUR FINANCIAL JOURNEY If you’re just beginning your financial journey, it might feel overwhelming. Finances are one topic many are unwilling to talk about, leaving you on your own to figure out basics like budgeting, building your credit score or negotiating your first salary. Here are some tips to provide you with the tools you need not just to survive, but thrive and empower you on your journey to financial wellness. Get a clear picture of your finances While the word “budget” can sound scary, it just means making a plan for how to best use your money. You need to understand your financial picture before planning where you want to go. It begins with two steps: know how much money is coming in (what you earn) and how much is going out (tracking all your spending). Budgeting apps or your local banker can help you get started. If you find yourself in a situation where you have more bills than income, your first focus should be on increasing your income. Increasing your income could look like taking on a side hustle temporarily, learning a new in-demand skill, asking for a raise or changing jobs to get a bump in pay. After tracking your spending for a few weeks, you’ll see areas where you could cut back. Some costs are essential (like rent and utilities, food and debt repayment), but other areas may be possible to trim, like going out to eat and non-essential purchases. How to build your credit score Having a good credit score makes it possible to open new credit cards or get loans, to buy a car or home - and can even impact your ability to rent an apartment. From a lender’s point of view, a good credit score means you’ll be reliable when paying your bills.

Be prepared to describe the skills, knowledge and experience that make you a valuable employee and do your research! Understanding the salary range for the role and what types of salary packages are common for someone with your level of experience will help you during the negotiation period. If the offer seems low, ask about other benefits, which can be part of your overall compensation package. If your skills meet or exceed the requirements of the position, it’s reasonable to ask for 10-20% more than the initial offer. Remember, they are expecting you to negotiate and you don’t have to accept the job offer immediately. Tell them you’d like to take a day or two to consider it, then take time to weigh the pros and cons, and consult trusted friends or family members. Developing the ability to achieve your financial goals is within your reach. Visit your local banker to find even more tips to help you on your financial journey.

WHY REMODELING WITH GREEN MATERIALS MAKES SENSE IN ANY HOME There are many reasons why someone would choose green materials when building or renovating their home. Many reasons have to do with economics. The right products can not only help preserve the health of the environment, but they can also help to reduce the costs of powering and heating your home. But there are reasons other than financial ones to choose green technology for your home. Here are a few that you may want to consider. They can add value to your home It may surprise you to learn that many green products on the market today can actually add value to your home for reasons other than environmental ones. Solid wood flooring, cabinetry and framing can add beauty and strength to your home and may actually help increase the resale value. Windows can also help to add value to a home. If a purchaser sees that you have replaced old windows with new ones that are more energy efficient, you may be able to sell your home for more than if you choose windows that do not have as high an energy rating. They will not emit harmful gases Although many people are using plywood and pressboard in their homes, they may not realize that these products will emit potentially harmful gases as they age. Even floor coverings such as carpeting and the paint that we put on our walls can emit harmful fumes that can cause significant health problems in individuals with chemical sensitivities. Environmentally friendly products are generally made without additives such as formaldehyde or are designed to be low in volatile organic compounds. These products are much less likely to cause harm to our systems while they are in our homes. How to add green items to your home If you are building a new home, it is possible to start from the very beginning and choose materials that are environmentally friendly. If you have an existing home, you may be looking for ways to increase the range of environmentally friendly products you are using. By reading up on the products you choose for your home, it will become easier for you to make your home a greener and healthier place to live and may just increase its value at the same time.

Most certainly, everyone thinks about the style and color that new kitchen cabinets should be. Here, we want to talk about three considerations that are often forgotten. Available Space Somewhere along the line, we acquired more kitchen utensils, pots and pans, dishes and storage containers than we realized. Some nights, after washing the dishes, finding a place to put everything is an unending nightmare. When shopping for new kitchen cabinets, look at the available space in your kitchen. Is there space where additional cabinets can be installed? If your existing cabinets were moved left or right, would there be room for another one? Use the opportunity to install new cabinets to optimize the use of every inch in your kitchen. Organization On top of maximizing the storage space in your kitchen, it’s essential to decide how you want that space to be used. Do you have a lot of
smaller kitchen utensils and a few larger pieces? If so, installing more drawers might be a plus. Would a Lazy Susan in the corner make your life easier when looking for the only lid that fits the container you just filled? Do you need more cabinet space out of reach of younger children? Deciding how you want to organize your kitchen before installing new cabinets makes it much easier to organize it afterward. Custom or Premade Premade kitchen cabinets are ready to install right off the shelf. Although they come at a cheaper price point, stock cabinets will limit your ability to maximize your kitchen’s unique space. On the other hand, custom-made cabinets are designed to integrate into your kitchen seamlessly. What’s more, custom cabinetry is built to match your specifications for size, style and design, giving you more control over your kitchen’s final appearance. Kitchen cabinets are not just a functional necessity; they’re also a major design element. Choosing new cabinets for your kitchen shouldn’t be the hardest decision you ever make, but it’s certainly worth some thought. Considering all the factors will help ensure you pick the right cabinets for your kitchen.

TYPES OF REINFORCED CONCRETE RETAINING WALLS Reinforced concrete retaining walls are commonly used to hold back soil and prevent erosion in areas with slopes or uneven ground. There are several types of reinforced concrete retaining walls, each with its own advantages and construction methods. Here are some of the most common types: Gravity Retaining Walls Gravity retaining walls rely on their own weight and the weight of the soil behind them to resist the forces of the earth. They are typically constructed with mass concrete and are suitable for heights up to three meters. Cantilever Retaining Walls These walls use a thin stem and a base slab to support the soil behind them. The stem is designed to withstand bending moments, and the base slab provides stability. They are suitable for heights up to 10 meters. Counterfort Retaining Walls Although similar to cantilever walls, counterfort retaining walls have additional support provided by vertical concrete webs called counterforts. They are suitable for heights up to 25 meters. Buttressed Retaining Walls Buttressed retaining walls have a series of counterforts on the back side of the wall, providing additional support to the wall. They are suitable for heights over 25 meters.
The construction process for reinforced concrete retaining walls typically involves the following steps: 1. Excavation: The area where the retaining wall will be built must be excavated to the proper depth and width to accommodate the wall. 2. Footings: The footings are poured to provide a solid base for the wall to rest on. 3. Stem and Slab: The stem and slab of the retaining wall are constructed using reinforced concrete. 4. Reinforcement: Steel bars are installed in the stem and slab to provide additional strength. 5. Drainage: Drainage systems are installed to prevent water buildup behind the wall, which can cause pressure and damage. 6. Backfilling: The area behind the wall is backfilled with soil and compacted in layers to ensure stability. 7. Finish: The retaining wall is finished with a facing material, such as stone, brick or stucco, to enhance its appearance and protect it from the elements. It’s important to note that the construction process can vary depending on the specific type of retaining wall being built and the soil conditions at the site. Consulting with a professional engineer or contractor is highly recommended.

USE YOUR SENSES: 4 EASY WAYS YOU CAN MAKE YOUR SPACE YOUR OWN If you’re a millennial and a renter, you’re not alone - millennials are consistently the dominant renter generation, making up 17.2 million of all renter households. And as a renter, you may be looking for ways to make your home truly feel like your own. Renters usually have limitations on what they can do to their living space, so it helps to get creative when adding your personal touch. Even if you own your home, budget and time considerations may also limit how you can customize your space. However, there’s a lot you can do that won’t break the bank. To get started, consider using your senses to help you transform your space. 1. Envision the possibilities When you imagine home design, you naturally think of what you see. To personalize your space, start with lighting. More floor or table lamps help to brighten your surroundings, and lighter window treatments let in more natural light. Experiment with cool and warm lightbulbs to see how each impacts a room as you may be surprised at the change. It’s also important to consider color. Choose a focal piece that’s meaningful to you, like artwork or a memento, and then draw a color from that piece to unify the room. For your design palette, stick with warm colors like reds, oranges and yellows or cool colors like greens and blues. Provide contrast with neutrals (whites or light grays) or black accents. IMPORTANCE OF EXCAVATION The word “to excavate” exactly means to hollow out or lay bare. When performing construction work, excavation is tremendously important for construction projects. CHOOSING THE BEST SIDING COLOR FOR YOUR HOME Is it time for a siding replacement? Or is the paint on your siding starting to show fading or peeling? Choosing a siding color can be an overwhelming experience. After all, it is likely that you’ll be keeping the same siding color on your home for several years to come. First, before diving into color swatches, it is helpful to understand the expected paint lifespan on various siding materials: Vinyl Vinyl siding is the most affordable and popular siding option; however, one major downside of vinyl siding is that it often cannot be repainted. Fiber Cement While fiber cement siding is known to have a warranty of around 30 years or more, the paint warranty is separate. This is because the paint is often put on at the factory. Although the paint lifespan is extended, fading will happen over time and it will need to be repainted. Choosing a Siding Color Now that you know how long your siding color is expected to last, it is important to address a few key tips and tricks in selecting the right siding color. Here are a few key factors to help you choose the right siding color:
The color of your roof Your roof color will play an important role in your siding color selection. After all, the lifespan of a shingle roof is around 20-30 years. It may not be a good idea to select a siding color too similar to the roof color. For example, a dark roof and a dark siding color can make the home look dreary and uninviting; on the other hand, a light roof and a light siding color can make the home look too bright and sterile. The architectural style of your home What’s the architectural style of your home? Often, different home styles are known for different siding colors. HEATING YOUR HOMES WITH GAS FIREPLACES Although they’ve been around for quite some time, gas fireplaces have become quite popular with homeowners because they are energy-efficient and cost-effective. Not only are they convenient because they burn fuel and not wood, owners don’t have to worry about ashes and soot. Their main safety feature is their sealed combustion unit which reduces the threat of combustion gasses spilling into the room. Direct vent fireplaces draw their combustion air from outside while venting to the same outside atmosphere, so they aren’t consuming the warm air inside the house. Gas fireplaces run on either natural or propane gas and come with many attractive features such as gas logs that look just like real wood. You can choose from oak, pine, birch, fruitwood and more. Gas logs are ceramic and not only look real but also produce a great fire. Many gas fireplaces come with a remote control or are operated through the use of a wall switch which allows the owner to enjoy it as much or as little as they want. Finally, gas fireplaces provide an alternative source of light and heat during a power failure. Before installing your gas fireplace, consider the positioning of the framing and the ceiling joists in relation to the location of the fireplace. Since gas fireplaces require zero clearance on the back and the side, they’re ideal for closely confined spaces. However, there are other clearances that should be adhered to for the vent piping depending on the configuration. Gas fireplaces should refer to their instruction and installation manuals for more information on the specific clearances.
Fireplaces are the natural focal point of any room, usually located in the center of the room and should be taken into consideration before they are installed by qualified technicians. With direct vent gas fireplaces, technicians will be able to install the necessary vent piping for safe and proper usage. The unique vent process allows them to be vented vertically through the roof or horizontally through an outside wall. Another aesthetically pleasing feature of a gas fireplace is its glass doors. Glass doors enhance its natural beauty and allow friends and family to safely enjoy the view by reducing the chances of burns. They act as a barrier and keep wandering kids and pets from coming into contact with the gas logs inside the fireplace. Owners should also, however, take special care and use a barrier or gate for additional protection against burns. Most new fireplaces usually come with their own glass doors. However, if you want to install glass doors to an existing fireplace, you’ll probably have to have them retrofitted. Installing a glass door requires fitting the door unit into the firebox opening and attaching it to the masonry. For fireboxes made of rough-textured material, like fieldstone, standard doors are not a good choice because they can’t overlap on the opening’s edge. For older fireplaces, you might want to be careful during installation when drilling into the brick since it may have become brittle over the years. Qualified technicians have the experience and know-how to safely and properly install glass doors on all types of surfaces.

When building a garage addition, some factors that largely determine the cost are: size and materials. The size of a garage addition can vary greatly considering the variety of car sizes on the market today. Another element that factors into the size of an addition is storage. Some homeowners prefer to have just the amount of storage needed for tools, paint, and other miscellaneous items needed for the home. Others plan on using a garage for storage space and work space alike. Generally, 2-car garages are more popular among home buyers than 1 car garages. The price of a garage can also vary depending on if it is attached or detached. Detached garages offer more flexibility in size and location than attached garages. Detached garages can also be a safer option since it can stop carbon monoxide from reaching your family since it is away from your home. Cost vs. Value Report: The data from Remodeling Magazine displays
the average cost vs. value for a garage addition, which includes: “Construct a 26-by-26-foot freestanding two-car garage, including footings and slab-on-grade foundation, 2x4 wood frame with OSB structural sheathing, and gable truss roof at 6/12 pitch. Install 25-year asphalt shingle roofing with galvanized metal flashing; vinyl siding and trim. Install five double-hung 30-by-48-inch vinyl windows; one 3-0/6-8 exterior door with half-glass and lockset; and two composite 9-by-8-foot overhead doors with motorized openers. Include 100-amp breaker at main house panel and 50 linear feet of trench buried conduit to feed new electrical subpanel. Provide electrical wiring for openers; three-way switching for fluorescent ceiling fixtures over each bay; three-way switching for two exterior spotlights; outlets to code. Interior wall, floors, and ceilings remain unfinished.” As you can see from the information above, the cost for building a garage addition has gone up. However, the cost v. value for 2015 was at 64.8%. As always, the cost of any home improvement project depends on how often the space is utilized.

5 TIPS FOR SAFE, STUNNING OUTDOOR LIGHTING According to a recent survey, one in 12 U.S. homeowners surveyed do not have outdoor lighting for their house. As the days get shorter here in the northern hemisphere, adding or upgrading outdoor lighting can help homeowners live their best outdoor life 24/7/365 with perfect visibility and comfort. However, outdoor lighting also presents a few hazards, some of which could utterly ruin your al fresco free time. To keep things safe and beautiful, here are five simple tips you can follow. 1. Leverage your lighting for security and visibility Well-planned outdoor lighting accomplishes two things. First, it safely and comfortably extends your usable living space. Second, it deters intruders from prowling your property. To pull off this double duty, pay special attention to ensuring all pathways, social spaces and entrances are illuminated. Also, instead of motion-activated lighting, consider an always-on approach. This can be a better deterrent before a ne’er-do-well enters your yard. And thanks to LED bulbs, leaving a few outdoor lights on doesn’t have to cost a lot or create a lot of heat. 2. Ensure everything is outdoor-rated Only use bulbs, fixtures, cords and outlets specifically rated for outdoor use. Fortunately, with the near-infinite range of outdoor lighting styles on the market, you’ll never have to sacrifice on aesthetics. Choosing correctly rated equipment lets you enhance the appeal of your property, highlighting architectural features and landscaping focal points, without risking failure, fire or other calamities.
3. Only use GFCI outlets GFCI or GFI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter outlet. These outlets will shut off power almost instantly if any plugged-in devices contact water. GFCI outlets have only been required in homes since 1971, according to the National Fire Protection Association. So, if your home was built before then, calling in an electrician is a wise decision. 4. Avoid risky placement Unless specifically designed for it, outdoor lights shouldn’t be directly on grass. Prone to being either wet or tinder dry, adding electricity to grass just isn’t a smart move. Also, if your wiring will be buried, make sure it isn’t under anything highly flammable, such as mulch or wood chips. An experienced electrician can help you find safe and attractive solutions, such as installing directly on concrete or in gravel beds. 5. Respect the maximum wattage Screwing a 100-watt bulb into a fixture with a 75-watt maximum will, at best, waste your money on bulb replacements. You’re also likely to cause permanent damage to the fixture itself. To steer clear of these issues, always choose a bulb where the wattage is equal to or less than the fixture’s maximum. This doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice brightness. With LED bulbs, you can get the same or greater illumination as incandescent bulbs with just a fraction of the wattage. When in doubt, call a professional. Anytime you’re unsure about your outdoor lighting safety is a good time to get in touch with an expert.
