New St. Paul’s. We were thrilled when Premier Horgan announced Treasury Board approval for the new St. Paul’s at the Jim Pattison Medical Centre. It was the culmination of a sustained effort spanning two decades and the collective engagement of countless supporters and donors. We expect to have shovels in the ground next year with the grand opening in 2026. A family’s lasting legacy. Three generations of the Louie family have supported St. Paul’s with their time and philanthropy. Last fall, they honoured us with a $6.5 million gift that will continue the family’s legacy in an expanded Tong Louie Cardiac Wing at the new St. Paul’s.
Message from leadership What a year! As we celebrate the 125th anniversary of St. Paul’s, we also celebrate an outstanding year for the Foundation, Providence Health Care, and the people of BC. Here are a few of our most memorable moments reflecting the theme of this year’s annual report: the past, present, and future of health care at St. Paul’s.

Supercluster. A year ago, we announced our participation in Canada’s Digital Technology Supercluster. This year, PHC, supported by the Foundation, became a key member in the Supercluster’s first project: a cloud-based network that can diagnose skin cancer from uploaded photographs. With a disease as fast moving as melanoma, and long waits to see BC’s few dermatologists, this has incredible potential to save and improve lives right across BC. Greatest needs. Thanks to you, our 21st Lights of Hope raised a record $3.2 million to support the greatest needs of our patients, residents, and caregivers right across PHC. We welcomed the Year of the Pig at the 12th annual Feast of Fortune gala and raised more than $1 million for Mount Saint Joseph Hospital (MSJ). This year, the funds will provide MSJ with urgently-needed equipment including defibrillators, ventilators, tilting wheelchairs, and the gift of compassion itself: a blanket
warmer for seniors in acute care. Heartfelt appreciation. We bid farewell to our outgoing Chair, Kathryn Young, with our deep thanks for her long service to the Foundation. We are especially grateful for her determined leadership in the years preceding the Treasury Board announcement. Warm welcome. John Montalbano has served on the board for three years and has graciously agreed to accept the role of Chair. John has years of hands-on community engagement and a commitment to improving health care; we look forward to having him at the helm as we move toward the new St. Paul’s. Of course, you—our donors—are at the heart of all these achievements. We are inspired by your trust, your support, and your compassion. Together, we are building a bridge from Burrard Street to Station Street; from the past to the future; from our history to our destiny. Thank you.

New St. Paul’s A green light for the new St. Paul’s! When BC Premier John Horgan announced that the business plan for a new St. Paul’s was approved on February 15, we realized a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity—creating a hospital and care campus from the ground up, one that’s purpose built to put people first. The new St. Paul’s at the Jim Pattison Medical Centre will be the largest hospital redevelopment in BC’s history. The hospital will have capacity for up to 548 beds, including 115 new beds. The site will be home to leading provincial programs and referral centres, and offer a diverse range of general and specialized care. Patients will have digital access to their own medical files and quicker diagnostic times, with treatments harnessing things like immunotherapy, virtual reality, robotics, 3D printing, and artificial intelligence.

As we prepare to build the new St. Paul’s, we’re more grateful than ever for the leadership, vision, and compassion of the founding Sisters of Providence 125 years ago. And we’re grateful for the generous support of our donors to help transform the way we deliver and receive care in BC. Doors of the new $1.9 billion St. Paul’s hospital are expected to open in 2026.
BC Premier John Horgan and Health Minister Adrian Dix join representatives from PHC and SPF to announce the new St. Paul’s.
Seniors & residential care A new era of caring
New St. Paul’s Celebrating intergenerational giving: The Louie family In October 2018, our Foundation announced a significant $6.5 million donation by the London Drugs and Tong and Geraldine Louie Family Foundations in support of the provincial Heart Centre at the new St. Paul’s. The Louie family have deep roots at Providence Health Care, giving both their time and their money. The relationship dates back more than 40 years to when Tong Louie first stepped up to serve on the St. Paul’s Hospital board. Tong Louie’s generosity established the first Tong

Louie Cardiac Unit at St. Paul’s, in the 1990s. The family’s giving legacy continues today with the next generation of Louies. The expanded Tong Louie Cardiac Wing at the new St. Paul’s will provide a lifeline for people in need of specialized cardiac care.
The donation will allow the Heart Centre to offer more treatments and clinics, and recruit more cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, impacting the lives of future generations of British Columbians.
Providence Health Care (PHC) has embarked on a journey to make life better in our residences, and for our residents. It began by asking, what makes home feel like a home? Site by site, staff gathered ideas and insights from each other, residents, and families and put them into practice over a two-week testing period. The process is guided by three themes: residents direct each moment, emotional connections matter most, and home is a feeling. The project is called Megamorphosis, which honours the uniqueness that each resident brings. It goes beyond their care needs, medical conditions, and daily supports to get to the heart of what brings each individual comfort and joy. At Youville Residence, for example, music and music programming is a vital part of their community. Residents enjoy musical instruments, CDs, and in-house concerts. With
the additional support of a music therapist, residents experience profound opportunities for inclusion, creativity, and fun. This transformational care model will be used as part of the Providence Residential and Community Care Services Society’s planned dementia villages on Vancouver’s Heather Street and in Comox. In April 2019, Megamorphosis was awarded the prestigious 3M Health Care Quality Team Award by the Canadian College of Health Leaders.
Best of all, for our residents, home doesn’t feel like living in a hospital setting. It just feels like home.
BC Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Judy Darcy launches the HUB.
Mental health & substance use A HUB of hope in the midst of crisis A substantial rise in overdoses led BC to declare a public health emergency in 2016, and the urgency of developing improved treatment options for a vulnerable population increased. In July 2018, BC Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Judy Darcy announced the launch of the HUB Emergency Department (ED) and Vancouver Police Foundation Transitional Care Centre (VPF TCC) at St. Paul’s. Along with the Rapid Access Addiction Clinic (RAAC), these combined clinics and services, known as the HUB, provide a continuum of
10 | ANNUAL REPORT | 2018 - 2019
care for people needing specialized mental health and substance use treatment, and help transitioning back into their communities. The culturally appropriate care includes an integrated Indigenous health team and connections to Indigenous healing programs. Both the HUB ED and VPF TCC are consistently at full capacity. The HUB was made possible thanks to the generous contributions of a number of community, health care, and industry partners.
A new professorship to address addiction care
his kindness and willingness to reach out to anyone seeking help for their substance use.
St. Paul’s sits at the epicentre of the opioid crisis, providing care to one of Canada’s most vulnerable populations. In November 2018, the Foundation announced the new Steven Diamond Professorship in Addiction Care Innovation at the BC Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU), thanks to a generous $1 million gift from Vancouver’s Diamond Foundation, matched with an additional $1 million from the Foundation.
The new Professorship will work with the BCCSU and the UBC Department of Medicine to develop an addiction treatment and recovery research program as well as an education program to train health care practitioners.
Steven Diamond was a talented massage therapist and addictions counselor known for
The Steven Diamond Professorship will reflect Steven’s own life-long quest to learn, to care for the most marginalized people, and to create lasting positive change.
Innovative technology A giant leap forward in health care technology While we can’t predict the future, we know it’s looking bright for innovation in health care technology. In November 2018, Canada’s Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development (ISED) officially launched Canada’s Digital Technology Supercluster (CDTS). As an incubator of innovation, the CDTS will tackle, among other things, some of the most pressing issues in health care. CDTS is comprised of large and small companies and not-for-profits, involving some of the biggest names in telecommunications, natural resources, computing, transportation, and health care, including Providence Health Care, supported by St. Paul’s Foundation. The BC-led CDTS will receive $153 million of up to $950 million in funding that the Government of Canada is investing over five years to support five superclusters across the country. As BC has the fastest-growing tech sector in Canada, the CDTS will leverage our strengths in data analytics; genomics; quantum computing; and virtual, mixed, and augmented reality. One of the first projects, announced in March 2019, will help a growing number of Canadians each year who develop some form of skin cancer. A medical imaging network, powered by artificial intelligence, will enable
12 | ANNUAL REPORT | 2018 - 2019
a preliminary diagnosis within days, instead of the current wait time of about six months. This will speed up referrals and triage of urgent cases, and improve survival rates. The project is expected to roll out in different regions of British Columbia in multiple phases in 2019 and 2020.
HOSPITAL DESIGN FOR THE FUTURE The Holodeck looks like any other treatment room, except for one thing: it’s not real. It’s a holographic simulation—and a radical new approach to how we design health care spaces. Located at Coquitlam’s Finger Food Studios, the Holodeck is actually an empty warehouse space. There, participants put on a virtual reality headset called a HoloLens. This self-contained holographic computer is programmed with full-scale, mixed-reality models that participants can interact with in real time. “Finger Food [Studios] is using HoloLens to map out our space and our equipment,” says Amanda Harvey, Program Director, Acute & Access Services at Providence Health Care. “It’s allowing us to see first-hand where things work, and as importantly, where they don’t work... It’s an absolute game changer for clinical space design.”
Heart, lung, and renal health A visionary gift to improve lung health With a generous $3 million donation from Michael and Carmelina De Lazzari, St. Paul’s appointed internationally renowned lung scientist Dr. Don Sin as the inaugural holder of the De Lazzari Family Chair in Heart Lung Innovation (HLI), and director of the Centre of HLI. Dr. Sin is currently ranked second in the world in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD) expertise. He has called St. Paul’s home since 2004, when he joined as a Canada research chair. COPD, a slowly progressive respiratory disorder, is a growing epidemic in Canada. A cure has yet to be discovered, yet effective treatments can help slow its progression and control symptoms. St. Paul’s Hospital is a hub for innovative research in COPD, a disease that affects an increasing number of Canadians and reduces quality and quantity of life.
“I believe we will see treatments improve dramatically in our life time, thanks to worldleading research being done right here in Vancouver,” says Dr. Sin.
2018’S INCREDIBLE TRANSPLANT MILESTONES Marc Bains will always remember the call from St. Paul’s that changed his life. After living with heart disease for 10 years, Bains learned a new heart was available for transplant. His successful surgery in June 2018 was the 500th transplant in BC, nearly 30 years after the first transplant took place in the province. In 2018, BC set a new record for the total number of transplants performed in a calendar year, at 502. Nearly half of these transplants (220) took place at St. Paul’s, which also set a record for the total number of renal transplants in Canada in a single year, at 193!
