We are an open and welcoming community with instructors who teach their passions for the pure sake of sharing their knowledge and experience, all with no exams or grades. Ninety-six percent of our participants would refer OLLI to a friend neighbor — maybe that’s you! Lifelong learning in our OLLI program is a great way to become part of an active and curious community, find new friends, learn about favorite topics, or subjects you never had time to explore, or pick up a musical instrument that’s been hiding in your closet for too many years. OLLI has all of those opportunities for you, and summer is a wonderful time to check us out. Classes are offered on an abbreviated four-week schedule, hosted online and at a variety of Delaware locations. Our one-fee summer registration provides you with access to as many of the scheduled classes as you can fit into your days.

Course Formats OLLI courses are offered in a variety of formats. Please double-check your course selections to verify that you’re registering for your desired format. IN-PERSON—Course is held in an OLLI classroom or at a partner location as scheduled at the location listed with the course description. In-person health and safety protocols will be in effect. ON-SITE/ONLINE HYBRID—Course is held in-person with an online section joining virtually. In-person participants may join virtually when their schedule requires; however, due to space constraints, students enrolled in the online section do not hold a seat in the in-person class. OLLI summer classes take place July 5-28, most classes meeting once weekly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. Online registration begins June 7. IN-PERSON PARTICIPATION GUIDELINES The University of Delaware and the OLLI program are committed to hosting in-person programs in a safe, healthy environment. We will explore a new way to experience art in a museum, beyond reading the wall label or joining a guided tour to learn why a work and/or the artist is worth your attention. We will look slowly, reflect upon what we see, explore our personal connections and discuss our observations. All that’s needed is your time and attention. Local artists are invited to bring three pieces of their artwork to the class. One piece at a time, you will write your reaction for six minutes. Then you will share what you wrote (you always have the option to pass) and the artist will tell us the real story behind the piece. A few have used their own gardens and even fewer have had an influence in design of their own gardens. They have incorporated the colors, shapes and arrangements of the gardens in their own paintings and sculptures. Artists to be considered include Monet, Morisot, Morris and Majorelle; Caillebotte and Cézanne; Dali and Kahlo. The subject will be explored with images and videos.

Creating art or just playing with color, you will love learning to use the vibrant colors that alcohol inks provide. Whether working on ceramic tiles or Yupo paper or glass, you will find the inks easy to work with, amazing to watch as they move and blend with each other, and a delight to your sense of color, shading and design. With a little knowledge and some experimentation, you will be creating your own alcohol-inked creations: pictures, coasters, trivets, custom glass tops, jewelry and mirrors. Supply list will be provided prior to the start of classes.

Students will learn a variety of watercolor techniques and how to apply them to a painting. Techniques include washes, wet-on-wet brushwork, dry brushwork, glazing and color mixing. They practice these techniques during each class and then complete a small example of each one. Then students will take what they have learned to create a complete painting. A supply list will be provided for students to purchase before the beginning of class. Join us as we take a different approach to making your own greeting cards. We will create cards using wrapping paper. Now your cards and gifts will coordinate, adding another personal touch to the giving. We will create cards for birthdays, “thinking of you” and holidays, as well other events for giving cards. Join us as we have fun making the cards. There will be a small weekly fee to cover the cardmaking supplies.

This course is intended for students who have already completed the 2022 spring courses with the instructor. In this course, students will practice making nageire and unconventional arrangements. Students will learn the “Tiffany” method of stained glass creations. They will design a pattern, cut glass, grind, foil and solder a project. This course is open to beginners and advanced artists. The instructor must approve all projects. There will be a $25 lab fee to cover the cost of materials. Closed-toe shoes are required. No sandals or flip-flops should be worn. Please note, this course is held for two weeks, two classes per week.

Using video and audio clips, this class will examine the works of two legendary Broadway composer/lyricists, Stephen Sondheim and Jerry Herman; one award-winning composer and lyricist team, John Kander and Fred Ebb; and one versatile composer, Cy Coleman, who worked with a variety of lyricists over his long career.

Each student will be dealing cards and learning to play and bid with a partner. Partners will be rotated around the table so players can experience different playing styles. We will cover basic bridge, so students can leave class and play at home. Depending on time and student willingness, we will cover scoring and basic bidding conventions to enhance skills. This course aims to provide you with a solid foundation on which to begin research into your Italian family history or that of a loved one. If you have already begun Italian family history research, this course will likely provide you with new avenues of inquiry and additional knowledge to help you progress in your research. As time allows, the course will address individual research issues students may be experiencing. Knowledge of basic Italian is desirable, but not required.
