Rax Restaurant

This is not a regular fast food restaurant. I recommend the Rax Platter, Rax Sandwich, and the twist fries I plan on stopping here every time I am in Harlan County. Rax Roast Great Food, quick and friendly services and the location is easy to get in and out of. The cheese sticks and bacons skins are great too. The only thing I dislike is the extra charge if you use a card to pay. Prompt and courteous services. This place is a true treasure to Harlan County. The workers were young and friendly. You really can't find that at many places. The manager on duty, I think her name was Brooke, was extremely nice and answered all of our questions. We will be back.

I've got to go with my head, over heart for this review. Near where I grew up back in the 80's, we had a Rax Roast Beef in Mt. Airy, NC. So today I relived a part of my youth by having a BBC (beef, bacon & cheddar) sandwich, and some twisty fries. I also got a BBQ beef sandwich to share. It was good, but not as good as the BBC. This is the last Rax to survive in Kentucky. I drove one hour from the Bed & Breakfast where we're staying, just to have lunch there today.....and it was worth it to me!

Food was good except the broccoli on my potato was still frozen. If you decide to give it a try I recommend going through the drive thru unless you enjoy having your ears assaulted by blaring cuntry(sic) music.

When you travel you get to see so many neat and unique things. Some things once common become rare.
They say that during the last ice age the ice did not reach the top of the Great Smokey Mountains. The Mountains saved plants and animals from extinction from the ice.
In Harlan there is Rax Restaurant. Once a mighty fast food chain with over 500 locations nationwide. Now that mighty fadtfood chain is down to two locations one of those two locations is in Harlan. The Mountains of Kentucky have saved this Restaurant from extinction.
I remember years ago being able to see Rax all over the place. It was a treat to recently visit a Rax in Harlan. Rax is one part Arbys roast beef sandwich shop and one part full service restaurant.
I ordered the Roast Beef Sandwich and tater skins. The Roast Beef was like Arbys. Maybe a little more of a buttery flavor on the bun but maybe that was just my imagination. It was good. The tater skins were a nice addition. The cheese was a little runny.
Why the 5 stars? Well the food was good for fast food and you have to admire the survivors in the restaurant world. When you are in the Mountains of Ky, stop by Harlan. Get you a Roast Beef Sandwich. Stop for a second and appreciate all the effort that was put into this Restaurant. And maybe if you sit real quite in the parking lot and listen to the breeze you can hear the words of a rock music ballad from the 1980s or 1990s when Rax was a dynamic nationwide chain. Recapture the past and enjoy a good meal at Rax in Harlan, a survivor in the Mountains of Ky.

The food is ok, location is clean, staff is nice, value not so much compared to other fast food chains around here. Free WiFi is a plus especially in this area where service is non existence. Don't think I would come back though for a second time, the food wasn't for me.

I Love Rax! One of the best places for a good roast beef sandwich had one of the best salad bars in the area!!!!

Really good roast beef better than Arby's it's well priced and the milk shakes are really good too

The salad bar was great, especially for a small town restaurant. Lots of options to build a salad plus potato and pasta salads that were very tasty. The menu items we tried we're good as well. The only downside was the restroom. One of the stall doors wouldn't close and there was extensive damage to the wall that made it feel unsafe.

I have enjoyed Rax for at least 30 years. They always had the best roast beef around. Although sometimes in drive-thru they don't keep the freshest or hottest french fries served but they always satisfy my taste with most of anything they have on the menu. Cheddar melt is one of my favs. No onions please. Long sub like roast beef sandwich with melted cheddar cheese and onions if you like. My husband always likes the turkey cold club sandwich. They do have a decent buffet bar at times. Rax deserves more credit than they get. They been around for a while and they are worth the visit.

Food real good. Place needs upgrades. Nothing has changed seems like since the 80's. Good people though.
