The fastest mouse in Mexico, Speedy Gonzales, is being eyed for an animated feature according to reports.

Speedy, who became a beloved character of Warner Brothers’ Looney Tunes cartoons, is currently slated to be the star of his own animated feature, with Mexico’s own filmmaker/actor Eugenio Derbez set to voice the mouse.

Speaking to Deadline, Derbez said: ‘In Mexico we grew up watching Speedy Gonzales. He was like a superhero to us, or maybe like a revolutionario like Simon Bolivar or Pacho Villa.

‘I’m really excited to be bringing this character to the big screen. And besides being Mexican – my full name is Eugenio Derbez Gonzales and I have big ears. The casting couldn’t be better.’

The project, currently titled Speedy, will be produced by Dylan Sellers of Rivers Edge Films and Derbez and Ben Odell of 3pas Studios.

Hank Nelken, whose previous works include Are We Done Yet? and Saving Silverman, is on board to write the script which is currently being described as a ‘heist caper’.

Before his Looney Tunes days, Speedy Gonzales starred in his own animated short in 1955, voiced by the legendary Mel Blanc.

Dylan Sellers, said: ‘We see this as an origin story of the great master, like a Robin Hood character, who ultimately ends up taking from the rich and giving to the poor.

In a time when Donald Trump is gaining momentum, the world needs Speedy more than ever.’

Amen to that, Sellers. Amen to that.

News of a Speedy solo-outing follows reports that a sequel to 1996’s Space Jam is also in development, starring LeBron James.
