I will definitely help if I meet someone wanting to commit suicide!” Speaking of the rescue a few days ago, Jiang Shuangping, a 51-year-old taxi driver, smiled and said, “It’s time to give a hand.” In the early morning of September 11, Jiang picked up a young passenger who was about to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge. The alert driver called the police for help and kept following the young man in his vehicle with the emergency flashers on before the rescue team arrived. As usual, Jiang Shuangping wrote down the experience in his diary on the social media platform, and unexpectedly received many likes from netizens. He has been a taxi driver for nine years and has tens of thousands of followers on the social media platform for the 500 driver stories he has written in the past five years. Being a taxi driver is a means of life, while writing is his hobby, Jiang said.

A Warm Heart: Call the police in the early morning to save the passenger who wanted to commit suicide

Thinking back on the early morning of September 11, Jiang Shuangping was still a little frightened.

At nearly 3 o 'clock in the morning, Jiang Shuangping picked up a young man near the Gele Mountain bus stop in Shapingba. When he heard the boy wanted to go to the Jialing River Bridge, he sensed something wasn’t right immediately.

Jiang observed the young man in the rearview mirror from time to time. As it was late at night, he couldn’t see clearly the face of him, only hearing sobbing and sad love songs from the mobile home.

"What's the trouble?" "What's the matter?" Jiang Shuangping tried to talk with the young man but did not get any response.

Jiang was worried as the car drew near to the destination. He turned the wheel and stopped the car at the bus stop near Chongqing Cancer Hospital.

"We can't park on the bridge. You can get off here." Though Jiang Shuangping let the young man off, he did not take his eyes off him.

The young man stumbled toward the Shimen Bridge over the Jiangling River, muttering "She abandoned me." Jiang Shuang felt nervous. He quickly called the police and said, “A young man is going to jump off the Shimen Bridge. Please come and save him quickly...” Jiang followed the man in his car with the emergency flashers on. As the young man stopped on the bridge, Jiang Shuangping parked his car nearby and continued to watch over the man.

The rescuers arrived soon. Jiang Shuangping waved to them and pointed to the man leaning on the rail for the bridge.

“The young man got one of his legs over the rail. With no time to think, we hurriedly dragged him back." Yang Yi, a firefighter who participated in the rescue, recalled.

Liu Hang, the police from Tuwan Police Station of Shapingba Public Security, told us that the young man thought of killing himself because of a personal relationship. Fortunately, the alert driver helped us save him in time. The young man has returned home after receiving psychological instruction.

“It was the first time I encountered such a situation. I was like, ‘He was young and had a promising future, and I needed to save him’,” said Jiang.

As usual, Jiang Shuang woke up at 11:00 a.m., sat in front of the TV cabinet, and started to write a log on his phone.

Jiang Shuangping comes from Nanchong, Sichuan Province. He and his twin brother drive a taxi in shifts. They rented this one-room apartment near Shinianpan in Shapingba District, which is equipped with two beds and a desk (a former TV cabinet).

There is a small desk lamp on the TV cabinet. In one corner are neatly placed “Three Hundred Greatest Phrases of All Time” and “A Selection of Classical Chinese Essays”, which were repeatedly flipped through and have worn down.

“I have a bit of knowledge of literary language and I love writing.” Jiang Shuangping did not shy away from his high school education background when it came to writing stories on a social media platform. In high school, most of his essays were highly praised and used as model essays by the teacher, which made him proud. “Whether or not I can become a writer, I enjoy writing. When I have spare time, I like reading literature books and listening to the news.”

Jiang’s long career gives him a pair of sharp eyes. He observes the world and life in his automobile carriage.

He has seen workers who worked on the phone late at night, and sad and drunk people who vomited in the car. He does whatever he can do to help.

He wrote down the sweets and bitters of life in his stories. What makes him warm is that he often receives sweet greetings from passengers when they get out of the taxi during holidays.

Jiang Shuangping began to post his logs on social media in September 2019. His 500 stories, with a simple style of writing, have been read by more than six million people, received 130,000 likes, and gained him 11,000 followers.

Life: Never cease to chase his dream while seeking a livelihood

In his view, dreams and life are not contradictory.

Before being a taxi driver, Jiang Shuangping and his brother worked in Guangzhou and lived on driving a motorcycle in Chongqing. “The job involves enormous physical work and exposure to the sun and rain. It’s hard”. Afterward, they hardened their hearts and spent more than 3,000 yuan in learning to drive a car. After gaining a car driver's license, they worked as a taxi driver. They work in shifts and seldom meet each other. Having a meal together is a luxury to them. Though it is hard work, they are quite satisfied with their jobs. “Both of us have a job and we can take care of each other. We have to love what we are doing!” In all their years of driving taxis, they have never received a complaint.

A few days ago, Jiang Shuangping picked up a non-local passenger after 11:00 p.m. On the way to the destination, Jiang excitedly introduced the night scene of Chongqing to the passenger. It took 39 yuan for the passenger to reach the destination, but Jiang was paid 50 yuan for the drive. The passenger said, “Thank you for your service. You've been working so hard!” These words made Jiang feel warm.

Though they are not natives of Chongqing, they feel that they are brother drivers in Chongqing. They love the natural landscape and the hospitality of people here, as well as the local cuisine.
