Mel Waters was a guest on "Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell", and was interviewed live in 1997, 2000, and 2002. His first-hand account lives on as one of the wildest ever told on Art Bell's show, and that's really saying something. Allegedly, Mel bought a rural piece near Ellensburg, WA and soon discovered a nearly-bottomless pit on his property. The hole's opening was 9 feet across, and estimated to be 80,000 feet in depth. Not only that, but there were supernatural events in and around it. Such as; a dead animal that had been dumped in the pit, was later seen roaming around the woods nearby. Also, an experiment was carried out where a live sheep was lowered into the hole. When it was hoisted back up it had died. When the carcass was examined, it the appearance of being cooked, and a gelatinous tumor had formed inside the dead animal. This tumor was removed, at which point a creature resembling a tiny "baby seal" erupts from the tumor. This seal-like entity then looked at Mel with an expression that he felt conveyed "compassion" and intelligence, before nodding at him and then promptly jumping back into the hole. Mel then states that the Federal government confiscated his land, and shortly after he was drugged and woke up in Australia. He also claims to have been informed of and spent time at a second "bottomless" hole located on public land in Nevada.

As strange and improbable as Mel's story is, I will say that having been a long time Coast to Coast listener, I had the pleasure of hearing all of Mel's radio interviews when they originally aired. Art Bell had a way of letting people tell their stories in long-form interviews, and asking questions that subtly tested the veracity of the guest. Mel certainly recounted his tale in a way that, as unbelievable as it was, had most listeners asking "is this really true?". I remember during one of his interviews (I believe 2002), he implored listeners to look up the general area of Mel's hole on Terravision (a predecessor to Google Earth) and see how large swaths of the satellite map data was missing. At the time I personally checked, and I can confirm that indeed the data was missing where the hole was supposed to have been. The satellite image showed a giant black square for dozens of square miles, just in that particular area of rural Washington. It certainly makes you wonder.
