Mepham Salutatorian: Werda Alam

Werda Alam's hard work and dedication helped her claim her spot as salutatorian of the class of 2012.

The 2012 salutatorian of Mepham High School is Werda Alam, a goal-oriented young lady who is keenly focused on becoming a doctor in the field of women’s health.  Her life’s desire is to practice medicine in a poor community where her skills and expertise will be most needed.

Alam has spent at least three summers in Karachi, Pakistan, helping the less fortunate alongside local medical doctors and other treating staff.  During the academic year, she has volunteered in the labor and delivery unit of the Nassau University Medical Center. She has also participated in the science club, the math team, and the peer tutoring program.

As an accomplished artist, Alam's work has been featured in the Bellmore Art Show as a solo presenter and in the Mepham Art Show.  She is a recipient of the St. John’s Women in Math and Science Award and the Scholastic Achievements and Excellence Award.  Alam is also an AP Scholar with Distinction and is a member of the math, English, science, history, art, and French honor societies.

Alam will attend a seven-year medical program at the New York Institute of Technology in the fall.
