What is Advent?
For many Christians unfamiliar with the liturgical year, the meaning of the season of Advent may be confusing. Some people may know that the season of Advent focuses on anticipation and think that it serves as anticipation of Christ's birth in the run-up to Christmas. The word "Advent" derives from the Latin word adventus, meaning "to come," which is a translation of the Greek word parousia. It was not until the Middle Ages that Advent was explicitly linked to the first coming of Christ at Christmas.
