Obervellach

Obervellach is a village with 2358 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011) in southern Austria in the district of Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia. The name could be possibly derived from the Slovenian word bel (white).

History

"Velach" was first mentioned in 10th century in the document of Bishop Abraham of Freising, who ruled from 957-993. Obervellach is a traditional mining village. In the late Middle Ages were also produced silver coins from extracted silver in Obervellach. Mining of gold and silver reached the most important phase in the 16 century. In Obervellach are high pressure water plants belonging to the Austrian Federal Railways from 1943.

Location and climate

The village lies in Mölltal, south of the major Tauern mountains and part of the village lies in the Hohe TauernNational Park. Obervellach is located on railway track which passes through the village. The nearest railway station is now Mallnitz Obervellach and there is also bus service belonging to the train station in Mallnitz.
