Nature is mysterious, gorgeous and holds great secrets that no human brain could understand. One of nature’s best kept secrets is General Sherman. Ever heard of it? Well it is the name of the largest tree alive on the planet which is around 2000 years old. Standing tall at 83.8 m (274.9 ft), it is the biggest living tree in the world and can be found in the US. Not only this, the tree is also referred to as (arguably) the “largest living thing on the earth”.

More about General Sherman

Not many are aware that the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park in Tulare County of California, US is home to the biggest living tree on the planet known as General Sherman. This giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) tree features a 25-ft (diameter) trunk and is about 52,500 cubic feet (1,487 cubic meters) in volume.

The history of the tree

The tree was named after the American Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman back in the year 1879. After seven years, this whole region came under control of Kaweah Colony and renamed the tree after Karl Marx. Then in the year 1892, the community was dissolved and the tree regained its previous name.
