Ried is situated in the middle of the Oberen Gericht region, in the most western part of the Oberinntal. The road from the Sonnenplateau (Serfaus, Fiss, Ladis) and the Reschenstraße Road merge together and make Ried an important traffic junction. The name "Ried" means boggy land. Excavations from the Bronze and Roman period clearly indicate that the area has long been settled. Ried was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. Before the circuit court was established in the district capital Landeck in the late 20th century, it had been in Castle Sigmundsried since the 17th century.
