Seehotel Grundlsee

Excellent hotel right on the lakefront of Grundlsee in the Salzburg lakes district

The Seehotel Grundlsee is a nice little hotel that you’ll come across almost as soon as you can see Grundlsee.  This was a nice surprise after staying 3 nights at the Heritage Hotel, both in terms of quality of rooms, location and privacy for that matter.  The Seehotel Grundlsee is a true lakefront property and whilst the rooms don’t have balconies, they’ve got doors that open right up so you can get an unimpeded view of the lake.  First up you’ll notice the service is friendlier, perhaps because the girl at the front desk had a father from Australia, so had some idle chit chat.  The rooms are much nicer than the Heritage Hotel Hallstatt, not that big, but a nice layout where the beds are facing the lake and the fittings, upholstery and basically everything is a bit newer and a bit better.

Without doubt the worst part of the Seehotel Grundlsee is the dinner.  I ordered up a local steak and it was absolutely horrible as well as taking about 45 minutes.  They’ve chosen a fine dining menu so there’s nothing for kids, the prices are expensive (like what you would pay in Hong Kong for a good stake), and service is slow.  I was still starving afterwards and moved down a pretty ordinary, also expensive dessert. The breakfast was way better, nice soft scrambled eggs, fresh bread and a few other bits and pieces.

The Seehotel Grundlsee has a nice lake decking area where you can chill out and take a dip, or do some massive bombs and dives from the slightly elevated decking.  It’s a nice little area, kids can feed the swans and ducks and there’s loads of fish swimming around looking for something to eat.  A short walk away there’s a grass area but there’s really no need to go there.  There’s a visitor center across the road, everything is in German so it’s a bit pointless going there, plus if you read all the posts you won’t need to go in there anyway.

There’s a boat hire right next door which also serves up light snacks like pizza and probably Wiener Schnitzel but other than that, not much nearby.  Probably about a click up the road is a few restaurants and supermarket with limited stuff in it, but if you drive to the top of the lake, about 5-6km maybe, there’s another supermarket and restaurant and a superb area for hanging out and having a picnic.  Read more about that in my “What We Did” section.
