'The situation messed me up': Kaka reveals why he snubbed a huge Manchester City deal and moved to Real Madrid in 2009

In 2009, Kaka, whom many considered to be the best player in the world at the time, completed a move to Real Madrid from AC Milan.

However, half a year before that, in the 2009 January transfer window, he turned down a chance to join Manchester City.

"I was sat at home when the telephone rang - I can still remember it clearly," Kaka told FourFourTwo back in 2017.

"It was my father and he seemed nervously excited. Then he told me a team in England, Manchester City, had made Milan a huge offer for me.

"It looked like a new, exciting challenge and a new chapter for me, but it had all come out of nowhere, and very quickly. Soon I started to feel confused and anxious. The situation messed me up.

"I'd finally come to the conclusion that it wasn't quite the right time for me to go to City, and the main reason was the uncertainty over the squad-building process that they were about to undertake."

It's interesting how differently everything could have been. Kaka eventually joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2009, helping the side win La Liga in the 2011-12 season.
