Mureck, Styria, town in the district of Radkersburg, alt. 237 m, pop. 1,585, area 5.00 km2, on the left bank of the River Mur/Mura, at the border to Slovenia. - Local court, employment services, forest guard station, customs post, highway maintenance depot of the Federal and Provincial Highway Administration Office, chamber of agricultural and allied workers, district health and social insurance office (registration office), sports centre, youth and cyclists hostels, Kolpingheim centre, "Lebenshilfe" and "Volkshilfe" (associations engaged in life counselling and welfare), several secondary schools such as Bundesanstalt for kindergarten paedagogics, Fachschule for economic professions, vocational school; textile factory, electrical wire production plant, dairy. First documented mention 1187, destroyed by the Turks 1532, town status 1975. - Late Gothic parish church (1770-1780), high altar with figural decoration (after 1767) by P. J. Straub; Baroque Chapel of St. Patritius (1740); town hall with clock tower (built 1669, landmark of the town) and sand-stone reliefs (16th century); Trinity column (1738); plague column (1665-1668). Mureck castle stands on Slovenian territory.
