Prepare the soil: Choose a well-draining, sandy soil with a pH between 6.0 and 8.0. Amend the soil with compost or other organic matter if necessary to improve fertility.
Scarify the seeds: Creeping Mountain Lilac seeds have a hard outer coating that needs to be scarified or scratched to allow moisture to penetrate and germination to occur. You can scarify the seeds by rubbing them gently with sandpaper or nicking them with a small knife.
Soak the seeds: Soak the scarified seeds in water for 24-48 hours to further soften the outer coating and encourage germination.
Sow the seeds: Sow the seeds about 1/4 inch deep in a seed-starting tray or directly in the garden bed. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Provide light and warmth: Place the seed tray in a warm, bright location such as a south-facing windowsill or under grow lights. Keep the soil temperature between 60-70°F.
Creeping Mountain Lilac (Ceanothus prostratus) is a low-growing evergreen shrub native to western North America. It is a member of the buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae) and is also known as Prostrate Ceanothus or Spreading Blueblossom. The plant typically grows to a height of 1-2 feet and a spread of 6-10 feet, with trailing or prostrate stems that hug the ground. The leaves are small, oval-shaped, and glossy green, and the flowers are small and blue, appearing in clusters in the spring. Creeping Mountain Lilac is drought-tolerant and is often used as a ground cover or border plant in xeriscapes, rock gardens, or other dry, sunny locations. It is also attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
