Early 1970s Rolex GMT-Master Image From Catalog

“Pepsi.” There is perhaps no better known Rolex model in today’s market than a GMT Master I or II with a blue and red bezel. Indeed, there are plenty of folks out there who don’t know the model’s actual name — or, for that matter, what it does — but who are familiar with this color scheme and nickname! And for good reason: The GMT Master is a legendary timepiece, developed specifically for Pan American Airways pilots in the early 1950s and regarded today as the ultimate expression of the dual-time zone watch.

This advertisement from the 1970s is not a traditional print magazine ad, but rather a beautifully composed page from a brochure, distributed by a small jeweler, making it extra-uncommon. (Advertising comes in many forms, and certainly catalogs did an excellent job promoting Rolex products.) Here we see a gorgeous, tritium-dial reference 1675 with a brilliant “Pepsi” bezel, and simple, effective advertising copy artfully text-wrapped: “When special occupations make special demands on a watch, Rolex provides the answer…”

If this colorful page with its perfectly situated, sprawling watch doesn’t make you a proud GMT owner — or an eager prospective buyer — we’re not sure what will!

About our collaboration with Ad Patina
