This tree has a symbolic value all the less negligible as it has become one of the main landmarks of the Pays Sedanais.
It is the image of the woman who opposes the war associated with that of a reborn tree. The oak is, along with the wild boar, one of the symbols of Sedan whose motto “Undique Robur” (Strength on all sides), inherited from the La Marcks, includes the Latin word “robur” which means both oak and strength.
The inhabitants of Floing are at the origin of a collection thanks to which a "broken oak" was ordered from the marble sculptor Constant Duc who belonged to an old dynasty of Savoyard stonemasons who came to Sedan.
Despite successive deteriorations, we can make out the silhouette of a woman who, at the foot of the Broken Oak, is working to break a cannon with hammer blows while above her a new branch of this oak grows.
A significant number of fighters killed in the last hours of the battle were buried here.
