Ruth Monsell of Damariscotta and Camden, author-illustrator of “Silly Time in Rhythm and Rhyme,” will do signings of her book on Saturday, Sept. 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop, 158 Main Street, Damariscotta.

The book is designed to delight children from infants through age seven and features 16 characters, human and animal, all in colorful, whimsical situations. Each rhyme has the same rhythmic pattern. Ruth believes it is the type of book that can help foster an early love of poetry and music in children. She is a lifelong musician, and taught English for 18 years.

“Silly Time” is also an activity book, encouraging little ones to clap, slap or tap out the easy rhythm. Pre-schoolers can add percussion instruments, marching, and singing the rhymes, for more fun.

Ruth Monsell is also the author of Frances Perkins, Champion of American Workers, to be published by Histria Books next April.
