The municipality, which is situated at 722 m above sea level and home to approx. 3,300 inhabitants, is located on a wide, level plain with a view of the gentle rolling Alpine foothills. The village’s most famous son is Hermann Gmeiner (1919 – 1986), founder of SOS Children’s Villages International. The Hermann-Gmeiner Hall, among others, is dedicated to him.
Culture & Events
Wonderful yet intimate events take place at the small “Mesmer’s Barn,” which also houses a collection of agricultural devices. The ‘Heimat’ museum of local history provides visitors with insights into earlier times. In summertime, people gather to discuss culture, cheese and goings on every Thursday at the village square. Music is played and there are specialities from various countries to sample.
Numerous excursions can be enjoyed by bus or car to nearby Lake Constance or other villages in Bregenzerwald.
Tips
- The Bereuter family of Alberschwende produces classic wooden sledges dubbed “Ländle-Rodel.”
- At the visitors’ centre and shop, there are guided tours and tastings offered by the Bentele brothers, who produce pralines, fine spirits and honey-based care products. The range also features other honey products and specialities from the Bregenzerwald (cheese, sausage, smoked ham).
- When driving from Alberschwende to Müselbach, an especially impressive view of Lower Bregenzerwald opens up as the road curves to the right. There is also a rest area with benches where you can enjoy the view.
