Culture & Events
The modern Franz-Michael-Felder Museum was created in memory of the late Franz Michael Felder (1839 to 1869), who was a writer and social reformer. During his lifetime, Felder documented in numerous novels the poor conditions of rural life in Bregenzerwald and his fight against injustice. His masterpiece was his biography “From my life (Aus meinem Leben).” More about his life and works can be discovered along the easy-to-walk Franz-Michael-Felder trail, which extends from Schoppernau to Bad Hopfreben.
Activities
Schoppernau is the starting point for numerous fantastic hikes. The Diedamskopf mountain, which features fantastic views from the peak, is accessible via cable car. In wintertime, skiers enjoy carving the various pistes as well as the ‘fun slope.’ Freestyle fans can practice their moves at the Pleasure Diedamspark. Lessons for beginners and more practiced skiers are offered by the Schneesportschule and guided winter hikes and snowshoe hikes are offered regularly.
Tips
- The “Umgang Bregenzerwald” (village walk) through Au and the neighbouring village of Schoppernau provides insights into the design culture of Bregenzerwald. Rust-coloured pillars indicate the location of the various stations.
- An architectural gem, the Villa Maund, is hidden within the forest of Bad Hopfreben. Banker Sir John Oakley Maund constructed this hunter’s manor in the 1890s. Today, the manor can be rented for private events.
