Electric Toyota Supra coming in 2025

But long-awaited Toyota Supra GRMN model to see out the current generation with 405kW

More intel regarding a battery-electric transformation of the Toyota Supra has emerged, but not before a 405kW GRMN version of the current-generation sports car is released in the next couple of years.

Quoting a well-placed source within Toyota, Japanese website Best Car reports that the Supra will feature a battery-electric powertrain with e-motor/s at the rear axle and a “design reminiscent of mid-ship sports [car]”.

The source said the sixth-generation Supra will be revealed in 2025, which tallies with previous reports.

No output or performance claims are nominated, but peak power of 330-368kW has been mooted – significantly higher than the current GR Supra’s 285kW from its turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six.

Before the EV sports car (dubbed the A100 Supra) emerges, the long-awaited GRMN Supra is set to be released as a high-performance send-off for the popular coupe, packing the same 405kW ‘S58’ engine as the formidable BMW M4 CSL.

Intriguingly, the next-generation Supra EV could also spawn an electrified Mazda RX-7 successor, which has been linked to Toyota’s GR product development program.

If Best Car’s source proves correct and the next-generation Supra does move to full-electric power, the new sports car could be the mystery Gazoo Racing EV reportedly in development with a much-hoped-for Mazda RX-9, which is expected to feature a plug-in hybrid rotary powertrain.
