A twin-turbocharged Lamborghini Gallardo has set a new half-mile record in the U.S. thanks to a series of significant modifications and one very brave driver.
The Gallardo in question is owned by Gidi Chamdi who is well known among drag racing circles in the United States. The supercar was modified by Underground Racing a few years ago to pump out no less than 3,000 hp and in 2016, it set a half-mile record for a Gallardo when it hit 244 mph (392 km/h).
While Underground Racing now focuses most of its efforts on modifying the Lamborghini Huracan and Audi R8, Chamdi received word that another Gallardo owner was chasing after his record. Not willing to relinquish his title, he had its powertrain updated further and competed at a recent Shift Sector event in Texas in pursuit of a new record.

During Chamdi’s first run of the day, he sprinted through the half-mile market at 241 mph (388 km/h). Not satisfied, he did a second run, this time hitting a record-breaking 249 mph (401 km/h). That wasn’t enough for him as he then recorded a second run at 249 mph before breaking the 250 mph (402 km/h) barrier for the fourth and fifth runs of the day, reaching 252 mph and 253 mph (405 and 407 km/h) respectively.
Making these runs all the more impressive is that they were set on street-legal Toyo R888R tires and not the drag radial tires that you may expect.
Only a handful of other cars have eclipsed the 250 mph half-mile barrier, including twin-turbo Huracan and R8 models also built by Underground Racing.
