Audi driver loses control and crashes on Club Street

LINKSFIELD - RESIDENTS on Club Street in Linksfield were disturbed by the sound of a vehicle smashing into the sidewalk and taking down a street light on the evening of 8 March.

Micheal Wood who witnessed the accident said, “I was driving along Club Street and noticed a black Audi A3 was stationary in the road, I passed the vehicle and carried on towards King David Linksfield School.”

Wood then stopped at the Engen garage and the Audi pulled up next to him. “The car then lurched forward and drove on, swerving all over the road. The car smashed into the pavement and took a street light out,” he said.

“I stopped and went to see if the driver was alright. When I got to the door a female got out of the car and it is my opinion that she had been drinking as she could hardly speak and she smelled of alcohol.”

According to Wood an ambulance was the first emergency vehicle to arrive, followed by the fire department. He said it took at least 45 minutes for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police to arrive.

Wood added, “When the Metro cops arrived they handed me a folder which had an official document in it. I was about to start writing when one of the two Metro cops who arrived told me not to write on the official paper. He handed me a blank piece of paper and told me to write my name and number on it. After that he told me I could go.

“I thought that was strange as I had witnessed the accident and all they wanted was my name and number.”

Spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police, Wayne Minnaar said, “There are no reports of an accident on Club Street. If there are no injuries… the public has 24-hours in which to report the accident.”

Minnaar added that no reports of drinking and driving had been made.
