They say couples don’t make it in Hollywood, but that’s certainly not true of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. The decades-long lovebirds have defied the odds and stuck with each other for more than 35 years, and it’s been quite the journey.

Although the pair have never walked down the aisle together, that hasn’t made a difference in their relationship. The duo — who started dating in 1983 — have managed to become one of the most respected and iconic couples in Hollywood. One thing Kurt loves about his lady is that she likes to dance for him any time of day.

“Every now and then, the mood will strike her, and Goldie starts dancing for Kurt,” an insider told Closer Weekly in April 2020. “It may be in the living room, the bedroom or the hallway. She’s still got all the right moves and he loves it. Sometimes he even joins her!”

The Thing actor and the Sntached actress have learned a lot about what it takes to maintain a longtime romance, and Goldie shared a little bit of her helpful relationship advice while chatting with Entertainment Tonight in May 2020. “Be patient,” the beloved star proclaimed. “That’s a great quality to develop and I think this is what helps relationships sustain … because they’re not easy.”

Considering Goldie and Kurt have stayed strong after all these years, they see no point in saying “I do.” Though the Overboard alums were both previously married — Goldie was wed to ex-husbands Bill Hudson and Gus Trikonis, while Kurt married former spouse Season Hubley — they don’t need a “marriage certificate” to prove how much they love each other.

“For people like us, the marriage certificate wasn’t going to create anything that otherwise we wouldn’t have,” the hunk told People in December 2020. “I don’t know. [Nearly] 40 years isn’t enough to finally say, ‘Well I guess … .’”

Goldie doesn’t mind their unofficial status either because “it’s not about the marriage,” she chimed in during their joint interview. “It’s about the people and the relationship, and the will to stay together. And that’s a big one because if you want it, you can have it.”

1983

It wasn’t long after reconnecting on Swing Shift that the pair decided to go on their first date to the Playboy Club in Los Angeles in 1983. “Two hours later, we were still talking — we hadn’t danced at all. I was living at my brother-in-law’s house, and she had this home that was being remodeled, so we went there,” Kurt recalled during a TV appearance on Live With Kelly and Ryan.

Suddenly, “there were flashlights around the room,” said the actor of security guards, who mistook the pair for intruders. “We were like, ‘Guys, get out of here — it’s her house!’ It was a lot of fun, I’ll tell you that. I just can’t believe it was that long ago,” he added. Despite the awkward first date, the two hit it off and began dating.

2016

After being together for more than three decades, the actress sat down with ITV Loose Women and revealed if she had married Kurt they’d be “long divorce” by now. “Marriage is an interesting sociological thing. If you need to be bound to someone, then it’s important to be married,” she continued. “If you have independence, if you have enough money and enough sense of independence and you like your independence, there is something psychological about not being married because it gives you the freedom to make decisions.”

She added, “In a healthy, longer-term relationship, I would say it’s great to be together about 68 percent of the time.”

2018

Kurt sat down with Daily Mail and revealed she and his beloved decided early on that they both wouldn’t pursue their careers full-on for the sake of their relationship and family. “I very rarely worked when I knew Goldie was going to be working. And vice-versa,” he told the outlet. “Which meant we could be together. I never thought that what the business could provide would ever take precedence over us. Money is great, but you’ve got to say no. You really do.”

Kurt also said that he instead stayed home with his kids. “Everyone has their marker on what is really important and where you draw the line,” he explained. “For Goldie and me, that core value was this: the kids come first … Kate was a very sparky personality, a fun girl, great. But when you’re a teenager you need Dad to be there, to say you’re going to be home at 11:30. I think as a parent you have to be an obstacle at times, so they can learn to get around you.”

He added, “If they learn to get around you, they can get around most troubles.”

2021

Goldie professed her love for her longtime beau while celebrating his birthday in March 2021. The Death Becomes Her actress shared a touching tribute for Kurt, whom she said she “can’t imagine [her] life without.”

“Happy birthday, baby! What a wild ride,” she gushed. “No we never got married, but one thing that continues to grow is our love. You’re a wild one, brilliant, lovable, childlike, perfectly maddening, a father supreme and deeply funny! You’re the catch … and you’re all mine.”

2022

In January 2022, Goldie appeared on Today with Hoda & Jenna and recounted her first date with Kurt at the Playboy Club. The duo danced together that night, and it was only the beginning of their epic love story.

“We thought, ‘Let’s go and learn how to do the Jitterbug together,” the actress shared. “It was kind of romantic, the whole night was romantic. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!”

One month later, Oliver shared a video on Instagram with the famous couple riding along in his car. The Nashville actor told Daily Pop that he and his family were staying with his parents while his house underwent renovations.

“We’re remodeling the house, and instead of renting a place, I’m like, ‘Yeah, let’s just go back home,'” he said during the virtual interview. “So, I am living with Mom and Dad, kids are here, my son is literally over that shoulder right now. You can see his little head, he’s sleeping.”
