It may be trendy and eco-friendly, but it seems these attributes can't save the electric G-Wiz from being voted the worst car ever seen on Britain's roads.

The boxy runaround, sold as a commuter favourite and designed to be easier to park and cheaper to run than a conventional car, topped the poll of more than 4,000 motorists.

It even beat the Robin Reliant, Del Boy's hapless three-wheeled van in Only Fools And Horses, in the survey by motoring magazine Auto Express.

The G-Wiz polled the most votes, followed by the notorious Austin Allegro – a product of strike-hit British industry in the 1970s. Chrysler's PT Cruiser convertible was third.

Auto Express said of the G-Wiz: 'It's slow, not very safe and ugly as sin. Plus, owners still get stuck in the capital's jams, and they're in a tiny, uncomfortable box.'

A total of 18 motoring disasters from both past and present were nominated by readers of the magazine.

The Allegro was described as: 'The poster child for everything bad about British car manufacturing back in the seventies.

'It looked awful and handled dreadfully, and when the Volkswagen Golf landed in dealers, this car was shown to be hopelessly outdated.'
