A Speedy Gonzalez movie could be racing towards cinemas very soon.

The Looney Tunes film has been in the works since 2010, but Warner Bros has fast-tracked the project because of… Donald Trump?

Warner Bros. producer David Sellers explained just how the controversial Republican presidential hopeful inspired the movie, saying: "We see this as an origin story of the great master, like a Robin Hood character, who ultimately ends up taking from the rich and giving to the poor.

"In a time when Donald Trump is gaining momentum, the world needs Speedy more than ever."

The movie, with a working title of Speedy, is a "heist caper", and features the vocal talents of Mexican actor and director Eugenio Derbez.

Derbez compared Speedy to a superhero, adding: "He watched out for the little people, but with a lot of bravado and a weakness for the ladies.

"I'm really excited to be bringing this character to the big screen. And besides being Mexican, my full name is Eugenio Derbez Gonzalez and I have big ears. The casting couldn't be better."

Speedy Gonzales made his first screen appearance in 1953, and was originally voiced by Mel Blanc.

There's no release date for the film yet, but it will be made available in both English and Spanish-language versions.
