Rita Goray Fehring, 62, departed this life Wednesday, February 17th, after a courageous 10-year battle with cancer. She fought the good fight, she finished her course, she kept her faith. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Rita lived in Hixson since her marriage in 1982. A retired legal secretary and first female Chair of the Hamilton County Democratic Party, she had served in many leadership positions in the Greater Chattanooga Democratic Women’s Club and the Tennessee Federation of Democratic Women. Her most recent term as GCDWC President culminated in chairing the TFDW’s 2014 state convention in Chattanooga. Rita’s last event as a club member was co-chairing the club’s 40th Anniversary Celebration this past October. Rita was a tireless worker on too many campaigns to mention. Some of her many accolades included the Democratic Party’s Kefauver Award for Outstanding Service, and an honorary life membership in the Hamilton County Young Democrats.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, Roger and Vickey Goray.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Fehring, feline “children”: Sam, Sarah Jane, and Chance; sisters, Terri (Dan) Krassinger, Vickey Ott, Chris (Ray) Dooley, and Jean (Dennis) Hart; brother, Roger (Sandy) Goray; twelve nieces and nephews; several friends who were her “local family”.
A celebration of Rita’s life will be held in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, February 24th, at two o’clock, with visitation for one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to THAL c/o Pet Placement Center, 5975 Dayton Blvd.
