Geraldine Gebbert Hornstein, 85, of Victoria went home to her Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 24, 2023. She was born August 6, 1938, in Goliad to the late Willie Gus and Leona Preiss Gebbert. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Marvin J. Hornstein, and one grandson, Colton Fitzpatrick. Gerry is survived by four children: Cynthia Roney (Gary) of Houston, Sherry Hornstein of Goliad, Katherine Bass (Kent) of Grove, OK, and Darren Hornstein (Susan) of Blessing. She was a grandmother of ten and great-grandmother of twenty-three.
Gerry joined Marvin in working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company shortly after their marriage in 1958 and held a variety of customer service positions until her retirement with 30 years of service. She managed the Gebbert family farm with her husband until his death in 2016 and with her daughter Sherry thereafter.
Gerry was regarded as a world-class volunteer who never said no. Her efforts centered around service to the Lord through the Lutheran Church, including children’s Sunday School teacher, member of her local church council, bible study leader, Vice Chair of the Women of ELCA Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod, and President of the Midcoast Zone of the Missouri Synod LWML. She was a regular volunteer at Ladles of Love ministry and at Methodist Twice Blessed store in addition to coordinating mission donations overseas. In the 1970s and 80s, she taught, baked, typed, drew posters, chauffeured, and otherwise guided her children in 4-H activities. Gerry was a Master Gardener who inherited her mother’s green thumb. She loved to travel and never met a stranger. Her final trips included a church tour throughout Israel and a visit to the Ark in Tennessee.
Visitation is scheduled at Rosewood Funeral Home Sunday evening from 5-7 p.m. Services will be held Monday, October 2 at Zion Lutheran Church in Mission Valley at 10:30 a.m. with burial following at Mission Valley Cemetery.
Pallbearers are her grandsons and great-grandsons: Kevin and Carlin Roney, Kyler Hornstein, Kevin and Ky Do, Derrick Miller, and Remington Garrett.
