Poet, Hymn Writer. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, graduating in 1832. His first post was as curate of Templemore, Derry (1834-1836), and, after holding a number of ecclesiastical positions, he became rector of St Nicholas's Church, Guildford, Surrey, and Chaplain to Queen Victoria (1870-1875). He was a prolific poet and hymnist, publishing eleven volumes of poetry and approximately three hundred hymns. His books included "Hymns and Miscellaneous Poems" (1837) and "Litany Hymns" (1870), but he is best remembered for the hymn "Fight the good fight with all thy might". He was killed by falling masonry during the renovation of St Nicholas's Church.
