Ellmau at the Wilder Kaiser Mountains

Holidays at the foot of the picturesque Kaiser Mountains

The Wilder Kaiser region is home to the real Tyrolean way of life. With its lush green meadows and the incomparable Kaiser Mountains with its romantic mountain villages nestled to their sides, the region could not present Tyrol’s charm better.

Welcome to the Wilder Kaiser - unmistakable & diverse

Four villages are part of the holiday region Wilder Kaiser: Ellmau, Going, Scheffau and Söll. Each of the villages enchants with its diverse leisure opportunities, its carefully preserved architecture and its hospitality. In the middle of it all lies the Landhotel Föhrenhof in the film location Ellmau, known from the “Bergdoktor” TV series. The village lies on 820 metres of altitude in the Söllandl, nestled between the limestone massif of the Wilder Kaiser Mountains in the North and the Hartkaiser in the South, about 19 kilometres from Kufstein.

Close to the Wilder Kaiser - the Landhotel Föhrenhof

The Landhotel Föhrenhof is situated in a treasured location in the village part Auwald in Ellmau and is the closest hotel to the Wilder Kaiser mountain range. At the edge of green meadows and with a view of the Wilder Kaiser Mountains, your nature experience starts right on the doorstep. A bike path leads right past the house and you can also start your hike from the hotel. Quiet and contemplative and yet full of possibilities - this perfectly summarises your holiday at the Landhotel Föhrenhof. Just as the saying goes: In peace lies strength.

Hospitality and tradition

The Wilder Kaiser region seems as if right from a picture book: Picturesque facades, old farms with belfries on the roof and a rural cultural landscape coin this piece of earth in the Kitzbühel Alps. Experience the traditional Tyrolean lifestyle during your holidays in Ellmau. Old customs and a cheerful way of life are lived here like in former times and shared with the guests, no matter if they get to know the region for the first time or have been here before. A fixture in the summer in Ellmau are the Ellmau summer nights which breathe life into the village with live music, traditional crafts and traditional specialties.

Where the „Bergdoktor“ lives - the Föhrenhof in Ellmau

Since 2007, the German TV series “The Bergdoktor” has been filmed at the Wilder Kaiser. The popular TV series looks back on 13 successful seasons around the work and love life of Doctor Gruber, played by Hans Sigl. The Föhrenhof also has a role in the series: The Föhrenhof inn’s interior was used as a filming location for the inn in the series. Beside this location many other locations of the series can be visited (guided tours are offered in most places).

The Kaiser Mountains in the Tyrolean Alps

Large parts of the Kaiser Mountains, which encompass all summits of the Wilder and the Zahmer Kaiser, are a nature preserve and unspoilt by roads or cable cars. The whole nature preserve stretches across an area of 102 km2 and lies between 480 metres and 2,344 metres above sea level at the Ellmauer Halt. The “Kaiser” is a part of the Northern Limestone Alps and mainly consists of Wetterstein Limestone, a regional geological formation which has a silvery shine, and dolomite rock.

A winter dream in Tyrol

In winter, the holiday region becomes a playground for skiers of all age groups: The Skiwelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental stands out as one of the most modern ski regions in Austria and provides a fantastic offer: 284 piste kilometres with 90 cable cars and lifts guarantee ski fun from the beginning of December to mid-April.

Summer holidays in Tyrol

In summer the region flourishes and invites you to enjoy varied mountain sports. The Wilder Kaiser region was awarded with the “Österreichisches Wandergütesiegel” (a quality seal for hiking regions) and belongs to the world’s biggest e-bike region, the “Kitzbühel Alps - Kaiser Mountains”. But also climbers, not only from Austria but also from the neighbouring Bavaria, find excellent possibilities to climb on the rocks. No matter if you are looking for an eventful family holiday, a comfortable activity and indulgence holiday or extreme sports, the mountain landscape at the Wilder and the Zahmer Kaiser Mountains can be enjoyed as you wish.

In the evening everyone gathers around the table at the Landhotel Föhrenhof to wind down the day with a delicious menu. Look forward to a summer or winter holiday in Tyrol near the majestic Wilder Kaiser and send an enquiry to the Landhotel in Ellmau!
