When the temperatures drop, tights are an indispensable outfit savior. Whether they peek out just a sliver between a midi-dress and knee-high boots or are the star of the look with a miniskirt outfit, tights remain our favorite accessory for cold days—and they’re anything but boring in winter 2023. This year they’re especially eye-catching: From Jacquemus to Gucci, the fall-winter 2023–2024 runways went wild with tights. But even those who want to go more classic this season will get their money’s worth. From playful to cozy and warm, the winter 2023 tights trends present themselves as more than versatile—find our favorites below.

1. Lace tights

This season, lace tights are making their big comeback—a bit of Y2K, but above all, a lot of romance and playfulness. On the Jacquemus runway, tights with lace details underscored a flirty aesthetic. Paired with Mary Janes, lace stockings look especially girly, while they’re more sophisticated with a low boot or heel. For a full ’00s throwback, try going for a bright color paired with sneakers.

A trend that’s extremely warm, and stylish too? What’s not to love. Labels like Chanel are all about knit tights, but it’s easy to copy at every price point. You can also try wearing knit over-the-knee stockings for a similar look; simply add classic black tights underneath for that extra dose of warmth.

This winter you can even send a message with your tights. For example, short slogans are popping up on pairs, and zodiac-themed tights are trending as well if you want a more personalized, mystical vibe.

We’re seeing red. Gucci, Chanel, and many more showed the trendy color in the form of tights. In combination with pieces like ballet flats, Mary Janes, cardigans, and blazers, red tights add a bright, unexpected contrast. You can also pair them with red shoes or boots to create an elongated silhouette.

It started with bows in our hair, moved on to bows on our ready-to-wear, and then bows on bags and accessories. Especially on TikTok and Instagram, bows are having a big moment. So it makes total sense that we’re seeing them again as a tights trend, whether as a small detail on the back of the ankle or full on “riot girl” in styles made of mesh or with cutouts.

In keeping with the festive season, our tights can also sparkle for all they’re worth: Expect glitter embellishments, pearls, and rhinestone applications to pop up on party-worthy legwear. If you have a simple LBD, you can use your party tights as an outfit highlight—or go full throttle with sparkle on sparkle.

Logomania is still going strong—but has become a touch more sophisticated. Monogram tights are perfect for adding a touch of luxe to your look without splurging on the highest-ticket designer item. And they’re so versatile to style: Go casual with a miniskirt, sweater, socks, and loafers, or more upscale with heels and a cocktail dress.

8. Animal-print tights

Keep it wild this season, as animal-print tights are a perennial favorite. They’re a fuss-free way to add a little extra oomph to just about any outfit, whether it’s the minimal side or full-on, like Jennifer Lopez’s look.

Back to basics! Don’t write off plain black leggings just because they’re a staple. Black, slightly transparent tights are big this season—not only on the runway, but also IRL. Which is great because they’ll never go out of style.

Tip: What does DEN mean for tights?

You’ve definitely seen this term when buying tights—but what does the term DEN actually mean? DEN stands for “denier,” and refers to the weight of the tights yarn per 9,000 meters in grams. The higher the DEN or denier, the heavier the yarn and the more opaque your tights will be. Most tights start at 10 DEN, making them very thin and sheer. Anything over 40 DEN is opaque. There you have it!
