Like everything else, baby names are subject to trends. And whether you're looking to find a cool and popular baby name or a rare and unique one, knowing the trends up front will help you match up with a moniker that won't give you baby name regret.

One baby-name trend that Quartz, a popular news organization, has noticed? The rise of short name, specifically four-letter ones. The site reports the length of baby names has been dropping since a peak in the late '80s and early '90s., when names like Michael and Christopher were the most common. And it doesn't take long to verify Quartz's observation: One look at the list of the top boy names released by Social Security Administration (SSA) and you'll see Liam and Noah taking up the first two spots.

And it's easy to see why: short names pack a punch. They're easy to spell, easy to remember and have an indescribable cool factor to them. So, if you're looking to pick a short boy name, here are the most popular ones out there right now according to the SSA.

Short, Two-Letter Boy Names

Interestingly enough, there are only two boys' names on the SSA list that are only two letters long: Bo and Ty. (Other two-letter monikers, like Ed, Cy, Al and Oz, are probably more likely used as nicknames for a longer boy name.) So while it's tough to find a ton of choices for two-letter names, three- and four-letter names abound.
