A few weeks ago, I read what was almost certainly my book of the year and possibly best book ever. After reading this I may have to revise my list. 5 stars is nowhere enough for this book.

The fourth book in the DI Erica Swift series. This starts with a husband and wife sitting on a park bench, watching their 5-year-old daughter Ellie. The mother is stabbed and in the mayhem that follows, Ellie is abducted. DI Erica Swift is assigned both cases.

What follows is a very intense investigation, scrutinising all the CCTV footage and any phone photos, videos, looking for the smallest of clues, also looking at the parents lives and people they associate with. This case is even more stressful than most for DI Swift, as she has her own daughter of a similar age.

This starts at 100mph and speeds up! It does not relent for a moment. You will not want to put this down. It just flows together so well, with twists and turns and major surprises, and heart breaking, very emotional sections. I especially liked the chapters written from Ellies perspective, it really sounded like a 5-year-old talking. This is an intriguing tale showing how police officers must be professional, even when the case is very close to their personal lives.

Really cannot wait to read the next instalment

What an intriguing case has dropped onto DI Erica Swift's desk! A mother, sitting with her husband as their young daughter plays in the park, is stabbed by a hooded person, and in the ensuing panic, the little girl is missing! The husband is beside himself, with not knowing if his beloved wife can make it through surgery and his daughter is no where to be found! Was the attack on purpose to take eyes off the girl, does the husband have anything to do with all that happened, or is some sadistic bunch taking children for purposes unknown...The investigation is intense, combing through any camera photos in the area, digging into the lives of husband and wife...And any of their known associates... Trying to locate that one link that may bring the little girl home...
Erica thinks of her daughter, Poppy, almost the same age as the missing Ellie...And knows what horror she would go through, having already been there with her husband in the past...It is a tough case, but DI Swift and team will not stop until they have an answer...People surprise you all the time, and when they finally lock onto a 16 year old boy he can Not continue holding his information..Worrying about the little girl brings him to Erica...And What he let's them know may happen brings fear into every cops heart...
A fabulous story showing police officers as most are...People like you or me, with families and feelings, just trying to do a job to keep Everyone safe at home with loved ones...

"The Child Catcher" is the fourth book in
M.K. Farrar's DI Erica Swift series.

All books in the series are standalone reads.

Unfortunately, "The Child Catcher" was
not a good "catch" for me.

TRUE CONFESSION:
I am a huge fan of M.K. Farrar's DI Erica Swift. She is smart, methodical, and at the top of her game.

She is a shining star and one of my favorite fictional female DIs.

I am also a huge fan of author M.K. Farrar.

The author's earlier DI Erica Swift books boasted brilliant police procedurals, compelling characterizations, and over-the-top intrigue.

WHY 2 STARS?
It was the book's storyline that faltered.

I had zero interest in listening to the explicit details of how young Muslim terrorists are groomed and the brutality of child abductions.

Quite frankly, I felt that the author was trying to encourage readers to develop empathy for terrorists and this was deeply troubling.

I listened to the audiobook read by Emma Gregory, who did a fine job with the narration.

Even though this book was not a winner, I look forward to listening to future releases in this series.

Nobody bats 1000%.

This is book four of the DI Erica Swift Thriller series and sees DI Swift involved in the case of a mother who was stabbed in the back, as she sat on a park bench with her husband, while their daughter played in the playpark. Everyone’s attention was given to the woman who had been stabbed and no one noticed that their five year old daughter Ellie had disappeared. The Violent Crimes Task Force are given both cases and have to figure out if Ellie ran off after seeing her mother be stabbed, or if someone had abducted her. The husband is questioned thoroughly, as some witnesses said they were having heated words before a hooded figure came up from behind the bench to stab the wife. The husband lost his job and so the couple have been struggling with money and paying the bills, but he is completely shocked at his wife’s attack and the disappearance of their daughter. DI Swift doesn’t believe he is involved, but can’t ignore any scenario. Two hooded figures were seen circling the playpark for some time before the attack, but they split up afterwards, going in separate directions and probably taking their hoodies of after. CCTV is the only hope to find the assailant and to see if the attack was connected to the little girl going missing.

A sixteen year old youth is being brought up by his ‘uncles’ after his parents deserted him and seems to be getting radicalised by them. Turning him against the Western way of life and to take action against Westerners. A plot is being formed for some sort of attack and he needs to prove to his uncles and their contacts, that he is man enough to do what is required. When investigations show that a boy was possibly abducted on a street corner, some six weeks beforehand, the pressure ramps up and brings matters close to her heart for Erica, as she has a daughter, Poppy, who is about the same age as Ellie. She also lost her husband almost a year ago, whilst investigating a case and also her father. She has to rely on her sister to help care for Poppy when she has to work longer hours on such cases, which makes for a difficult life balance. She is paired up with DS Shawn Turner for this case and matters reach a point where she begins to realise how much she relies on him now for his friendship and more. When a baby is taken from her pram, whilst her mother is having a drink outside a café, the case takes a more desperate turn. Time is running out for some of the victims and a tragic situation lies behind the abductions.

The tiniest clue leads Swift and Turner to a local shop and some of the staff are questioned and CCTV footage asked for. Guilt will get to one person and worries about someone else will eventually help to solve each part of the investigations. The Task Force need to stop the plot the radicalised young man was to take part in, before a terror attack can occur and kill a large number of innocent people. Three young children need to be found and reunited with their parents, before any more harm can come to them. A definite twister of a read, with each part of the story seemingly interwoven and connected together. What should have been a nice time out in the park at the onset of a sunny day after some miserable wet days, turns into a near death experience for one and the disappearance of an innocent young child. What it connects to, is so much more involved than you can imagine and the author twists the tale, intertwining the different parts of the investigation and not revealing anything until the end. Definitely an author to follow and always a great read. I can’t wait for what may come next. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Something about this one

I did enjoy this book, not as much as the first 3 in the series I have to admit. I really liked the p!ot about the children, it was fast paced, I had no idea who the kidnapper was. And as always, it was all well written . I had reservations about the terrorist plot. With all that has been going on in the world during the pandemic, to me it just seemed like bad timing for a book to be written about these things, for a few reasons. But, I also live in the United States, and I would be looking at it from a different perspective. So e times that much has happened here during this pandemic, its already like no two cultures can get along. So, as I said that is just my opinion, and it's mostly due to the times that we live in! Off to start book number 5 until I fall asleep!

This is the first time in reading this author with the promise of a thriller that caught my attention. It is pretty intense right away with it being the lasso that captures you into this. A missing child is also one that will keep me because I have to know if and when things happen. Those are heart wrenching and answers have to follow. So it would also seem I have jumped into a series midstream. DI Erica will have to be quick because it keeps happening. This is fast paced with us holding on. Thrills and chills I do so like this one and will return to this author again.

This story is fast-paced and shows us that those in law enforcement are just like the rest of us...we all worry about crime and what would happen to our loved ones if something terrible happened to them or ourselves. DI Erica Swift is assigned this case and she has a daughter close in age to the girl taken. So it makes this case personal. But, finding the who and the why is going to be an uphill battle. Can it be done? Will they get the girl back okay? I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from Booksprout.

Violent Crimes is an understatement. I am attempting to read the series with the knowledge that eventually Erica and her team will prevail. But there has been more the usual amount of violence in this series up to now. In comparison, the Child Catcher has less physical violence but she has upped the stress factor. I did enjoy the almost secret secondary plot and the ending came as a surprise. Very close to 5 stars on this one.

Terrorists vs Kidnappers

A young man is being groomed as a terrorist. In his first attack he sees a child being kidnapped. He is torn between loyalty and morality. Can DI Swift make a difference?

This was okay. Neither of the story lines was compelling. Story dragged with Swift's politically correct musings. Did not like it..

Thriller

This was another good story in the DI Erica Swift series. It wasn't as dark and dangerous as the previous books. Still, there was plenty happening and it could have ended with far more heartbreaking outcomes. The twist towards the end actually caught me by surprise.

It feels so good when you dive into a book from a new author to you and you are blown away by it.
Not only is this is the first book in the DI Erica Swift Series that I have read it is also the first book by this author i have read. Even though it is the forth book in the series i was able to read it with no problems at all. Ferrar's writing flows very smoothly and i was able to easily picture the events as they happened. The author done an amazing job of keeping me hooked and turning the pages as fast as i could. This was an amazing 5 star read and I never knew where it would go next. The story starts with Mae and Jack Dempsey sitting on a bench at the park talking while watching their daughter Ellie plays on the playground. Then out of no where a hooded person comes up and stabs Mae in the back at the same time their daughter was being kidnapped. This setting made the hair on my neck stand up because i was sitting on a bench at the park watching my kids play. Needless to say it did not take me long to move and put my back against a tree and start a different book. The whole time though my mind was on THIS book and i could not stop thinking about why and who would want to stab this young mother and kidnap Ellie. Where they linked ? As soon as we got home i started back on this book and devoured it in 2 hours. M.K Farrar done such an amazing job of bringing alive all of her characters and really got me into their minds, including the crazy ones. The most heartbreaking chapters were the ones told by Ellie. I was bawling my eyes out reading them all while holding my baby girl tight against me.The descriptions throughout this story are very vivid and instantly transport me to the spot. Having your child kidnapped is every parents worst nightmare. Having read a lot of child kidnaping psychological thrillers I must say I loved this authors different spin on it. This may have been my first book by this author but it sure wont be my last.

Mae and Jack Dempsey had taken Ellie to the park on a warm sunny afternoon for some quality family time. Mae was working all the hours she could so things were a bit fraught between her and Jack, mainly over money. They were sitting on a bench while Ellie was on the playpark. Jack had noticed a couple of people walking round the park with hoodies on and the hoods up. He thought they must have been very hot dressed like that.
Then in his peripheral vision he catches sight of someone running up to them, an arm raising, a glint of silver caught the sun, blinding him, then it was gone. Then Mae fell off the bench, laying in front of him, screaming, with a knife sticking out of her back. A crowd surrounded them, then Jack suddenly remembered their child, he shouted, ‘Ellie.’ There was no reply, she was gone!

DI Erica Swift and DS Shawn Turner were called to the incident in the park, they questioned the witnesses and watched CCTV. They got SOCO to pick up as much as they could from the park as they saw the attacker had dropped something from his pocket. They went to a local shop and asked for their CCTV from the day they wanted, Yousef rang the shop owner and left a message. When the police had gone, he went upstairs and told Farhad what the police wanted and handed over Erica’s card. They checked the CCTV, deleted it and sent some from a different camera. Then they decided they had to bring their plans forward but Yousef wasn’t ready to be part of the plan.

From the Missing Persons Unit they heard another child had gone missing six weeks earlier, no ransom had been received. The family had been out, the child was seven years old and he was riding a bike whilst the parents pushed the pram with his brother in. He rode ahead, they had stopped to tend the baby. When they got to the corner, the bike was laying there and he was gone.

Could these two cases be linked? Could the stabbing have been used as a distraction? Why was Mae targeted in the park?

I was hooked by this book from start to finish. It was a fabulous story and superbly written. The story flowed well and I found I couldn’t put it down. I found the characters were well picked and the author covered some good topics in this book.

Again, Marissa has cracked it! I love Erica Swift and have done since book one! The characters are all developed well and make the story even more realistic than it could be. I was hooked from the start! So well written and with a well flowing and intriguing story!

The 4th in the DI Erica Swift series but the first book by this author I had read apart from a number of books she had co written with another author, so I didn’t know what to expect.

It was good. I wasn’t disappointed. I read it over two evenings which is a good sign that the plot held my interest throughout.

In brief, the story revolves around a mother who has been stabbed and her daughter kidnapped. The police assume the stabbing was a distraction for the kidnapping but don’t know if it’s connected to an earlier missing child.

Good plot, well written and I enjoyed it. Got to be 5*.

I am always disturbed by stories that involve children but, sadly, it is a fact of life that terrible things can happen to them. This crime thriller had more than one plot, which was a good ploy for the story as a whole. I can't say I had any sympathy for any of the perpetrators despite the reasons.

I liked the child's point of view because it brought even more depth to the story.

Good characters and writing (only one 'off of', which surprised me because it's usually American authors that use poor grammar/English).

I am enjoying this series - I have the box set that includes this story.

DI Erica Swift is back with her partner DS Shawn Turner in book four of the series. While Mae and Jack Dempsey were at the park with their daughter Mae gets stabbed and Ellie disappears. While investigating the case they find another unsolved missing child case. This is an intense, captivating story that held my attention from beginning to end and just when I thought I figured it out I was wrong. The Child Catcher is a great addition to the series and I look forward to reading the next DI Erica Swift Thriller. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

Narrator: Emma Gregory

Another awesome story by M.K Farrer, I’m absolutely loving the DI Erica Swift series.
When a mother is stabbed and a child is snatched the team know it’s essential they find leads as quickly as possible, Then another child is taken what’s the motive ? Why these children ?
As the the clues are unraveled I found myself surprised, it’s great when things are intertwined and you don’t always see what’s coming.

Another fantastic narration from Emma Gregory.

THE CHILD CATCER

DI Erica Swift, and her partner DS Shawn Turner, are called out to a case.

It’s a lovely day and they end up at a park.
Somebody had been hurt and sent to hospital .
There are families everywhere.
I thought, somebody must have seen something?

Then the police are told of a missing child!
Again, nobody saw anything!

As readers, we know everything .
This is one book you won’t want to miss.

A visit to the park turns into a nightmare for Mae and Jack Dempsey. Whilst their daughter, Ellie, play Mae is attacked and, during the mayhem, Ellie disappears.

Whilst DI Erica Foster and her team investigate this case they discover another unsolved missing child case - are they connected? Was the attack a distraction tactic?

This book has so many clever elements and was an intriguing read. This series is getting better and better.

The child taker by M.K. Farrar.
This is book 4 of the DI Erica Swift series.
Absolutely brilliant. I love this series. A mother has been stabbed while in the park with her husband and daughter. While everyone is fussing over the mother their daughter Ellie goes missing. Can Erica and her team find her before another child goes missing?
I love this author. Non stop action. I do hope there is more to come. 5*. Highly recommended.

Tough subject

Emma does a terrific narration as always. MK certainly takes on the tough subjects and does so with incredible sensitivity. I highly recommend this thrilling thriller that excites while addressing societal problems in Britain and by admitting the inequalities that lead to a downward spiral at the roots of much of the feelings of hopelessness and alienation that have driven some to crime.

Book Review: The Child Catcher (DI Erica Swift #4)
Author: M.K. Farrar
My Rating: 5 Stars

REVIEW
This case tugs at Erica's heart, unlike any other case she has had to handle since losing her husband. A child has gone missing from a park with her parents not far from her? How? Why? Who would do that?

It will take the entire team and others to crack this one and one very scared 16-year-old boy.
Intense, gripping, and mayhem await you in this one...
