In high school, Gates and his friend Paul Allen started working on computer software, and On programming languages.

After graduating from Lakeside in 1973, Gates enrolled in Harvard in 1973, but dropped out of it two years later.

In 1975, Gates and his childhood friend Paul Allen co-founded Microsoft, a computer software company, In New Mexico.

Microsoft received its first big break in 1980 when IBM asked them to provide the operating system for its new line of personal computers.

In 1980, Microsoft released its famous MS-DOS operating system for IBM’s personal computers (PCs).

In the 1990s, Microsoft’s Windows operating system was running on more than 90% of the world’s personal computers.

Gates resigned as CEO of Microsoft in 2000, but he remained chairman and chief software architect.

In 2006, Gates announced that he would focus on philanthropy and founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gates has been ranked as the world’s richest person for 17 years by Forbes magazine.
