Dürnstein seen during a cruise on the Danube. This very picturesque small town on the Danube river is famous for having been the place of imprisonment of the King of England Richard the Lion-heart, imprisoned in the castle whose ruins are visible in the photo above right. The town in the Lower Austria state is also one of the most visited tourist destinations of the Wachau, a region well-known for its wine growing area along the Danube river and inscribed in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites since December 2000.

The Kuenringer Castle is a ruined castle overlooking the town of Dürnstein, famous for having been the prison of King Richard I Lionheart. Now it is almost completely destroyed, but the the footpath that starts in the old town and leads to the castle offers spectacular views of the Danube River e the Wachau with the expanse of vineyards that cover the countryside.

The Wachau is the landscape in and around the Danube valley between Melk and Krems an der Donau in Lower Austria, about 80 kilometers west of the federal capital Vienna. In 2000 it was added to the list of UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage as the Wachau cultural landscape with the Melk and Göttweig monasteries and the old town of Krems.
