Barely half an hour from Innsbruck, in western Austria, rise the dreamlike Sellrain mountains. This is a mountain group characterised by beautiful alpine valleys with clear streams, framed by mighty 3,000-metre peaks and mighty glaciers. This three-day hut tour takes you through this breathtaking mountain world over steep passes and to peaks boasting astonishing views. You will be amazed by the 28 kilometres (17 mi) you cover and 2,310 metres (7,580 ft) of elevation you conquer.

The three stages take you through a magnificent high mountain landscape, so surefootedness and sturdy shoes are always necessary. You start in the small village of Sankt Sigmund im Sellrain, which is easy to reach by bus from Innsbruck. On the first day, you hike through the picturesque Gleirschtal valley, through untouched nature to the Pforzheimer Hut at 2,308 metres (7,572 ft) above sea level.

The highlight of the Tour is on the second day – the ascent of the Gleirscher Rosskogel. From the 2,994-metre (9,823-ft) summit you gain a breathtaking view of the Stubai Alps and their glorious glaciers. Then you walk through the idyllic Zwieselbach valley along a crystal-clear mountain stream to the Schweinfurter Hut.

The last day is a real challenge. However, the magnificent views compensate for your exertions. After you have conquered the steep ascent to the Finstertal Scharte, you can enjoy the wonderful mountain panorama from the Kraspesspitze, while the Finstertal reservoir glistens in the sunlight below. Once you arrive in Kühtai, you can take the bus back to Innsbruck.

You’ll spend the nights in cosy, yet modern huts, where you’ll also be provided with delicious regional food. I recommend booking your place in advance. Always pack enough water and snacks for the road. You can fill up on both at the huts.

The best time of year for this Tour is late June to late September. Check beforehand whether the huts are open and what the conditions are like on the trails. In the high mountains, it can get very cold and snow even in summer. You should also be aware of the risk of thunderstorms in high summer. Early starts are always advisable. Check the weather forecast before you set off and ask the hut wardens along the way. Pack suitable rain gear, warm clothes and sun protection.

Three unforgettable days in a breathtaking high mountain landscape await you. So grab your backpack and let's go.
